What up? Ver. II: Deluxe Unbanned Version

Well, I was banned for a hot couple days because I made short reference to the website I run in one of my sentences talking about my pursuance of journalism in university. If at least one of you suckers visited, you can consider my dastardly plan a success.

I suppose a quick retreading of info is in order. I'm currently a journalism major attending SUNY Oswego. I've been operating a webzine called *********, which officially started back in March. I'm doing my damndest to maintain it while balancing studies.

As for what kinda music I like, it's just about everything. Except rap and country.

Just kidding, and for all you old-time fans here that was a joke I actually made in the last introduction thread I made so, if you got it, you can come backstage after the show and receive your well-earned brownie points.

My first love was rock, Pink Floyd being my catalyst for that almost a decade back. I've gained much respect for bands like The Flaming Lips (possibly my current favorite group), Phish, Supertramp, Traffic, Motorpsycho, R.E.M., and others since then. I'm never one to turn down jazz though, cause guys like Gabor Szabo, Wes Montgomery, Thelonious Monk, and Donald Byrd also rank in my Top 100 Artists of All Time list. Purely mentally of course.

Finally, as for what I've been listening to lately, My current love is for a Korean indietronica/neo-psychedelia group (or person, not sure) called Mid-Air Thief. They only just came to my attention through RateYourMusic when a review for their new album Crumbling got front-paged. Excellent stuff. I've also been retreading my ground when it comes to nu-jazz (which I made a topic about in the jazz sub-forum before getting the boot), expanding my horizons from one of my favorite bands Jaga Jazzist into such groups as The Cinematic Orchestra, Dinosaur and, more recently, BADBADNOTGOOD.

So that's who I am and what I've been up to. What about you crude dudes/dudettes?

Zhanteimi 09-04-2018 05:47 AM

Why are they called brownie points?

The Batlord 09-04-2018 07:50 AM

I listened to Gabor Szabo's Dreams a little while back as I slowly dip my toes into jazz and it was pretty snazzy.

Donald Byrd
Nice. Under appreciated artist.

Did you try the listening plan I laid out in Lamp Lighter?

The Batlord 09-04-2018 08:17 AM

I got through some of it and Gabor Szabo was just a Youtube rec I checked out while listening to one of yours.

No clue. No resemblance to brownies whatsoever. Management thought it flowed better than "administration-approved congratulatory points".

As for Gabor, my big record I always play is Macho from 1975. It opens with a jazz-funk rendition of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 which is just fantastic. I highly recommend it as it also is extremely underrated.

Wouldn't it be more beneficial for him to go back to it when he's up?

Are you my dad?

This is the track I was talking about earlier btw.

This is the first time I've heard of this chap. Gives me kind of a Liquid Tension Experiment vibe with some of the basswork.

He was in BLS (Black Light Syndrome/Bozzio Levin Stevens) with Levins, who carries a lot of weight where ever he lands, so not surprising they cross over a bit. Stevens was influenced by a performance he caught from Paco de Lucía and created the album Flamenco-A-GoGo (where that ^ song comes from). Petrucci cites Al Di Meola as an influence, and de Lucía and Di Meola have worked together, so they all kind of mix together, even with Szabo. I wouldn't be surprised to connect them all to Andre Segovia at some undocumented point.

Man, what a small world we live in. Grog really connected us all when he banged on that rock with a stick.

Huge Szabo fan here as well. I actually just added two more records to my collection, Sorceror and 1969. Bachannal and Dreams are my favorite but I'm trying to collect all of his albums to really see how far the man goes. He's pretty prolific.

Oriphiel 09-04-2018 04:16 PM

How do you feel about this?

The man's a legend. He has more variation in his discography than a lot of American greats.

Idk. It was an offhand mention and I got btfo'd. I've been told not to mention it in any context whatsoever until I've been here for awhile.

Give it a month and no one will care. We just don't want randos dropping links and ditching.

When my rando status is revoked I swear I will post so many Ad Fly links to identity theft websites that I'll eventually equal 5000 people.

Because Lucem will go on to accuse them of planning a mass shooting and alert the authorities.

Emoticons are only used ironically or by people who are either scoffed at or given license to be dorky.
