GOING FOR A SONG 01-28-2020 10:52 AM

New kid on the block

Greetings from Going for a song ! I’m retired, I’m a Manchester man and I’m a serious music anorak. I’ve been collecting records since the early 60s, and over the last six years I’ve been teaching myself piano. My original music heroes were (and are) Cliff Richard and the Shadows. Then I got into the Beatles and 60s music in general. Then Bowie, Elton and many more in the 70s. Over the years I’ve listened to a lot of classical, jazz, folk and country music too. Rap and hip-hop bore me rigid. I’d rather hear songs and pieces of music which have melodies or tunes you can actually remember.

^ Take no notice of those guys, GFAS ! Welcome to MB, which needs all the Brits it can get.

Cliff Richard was never a musical hero for me, but he was to my older sisters and their friends; it was thanks to their enthusiasm for Cliff, Adam Faith and Lonnie Donnigan that I began listening to pop in about 1961. Within a year though, all those idols were abandoned in favour of The Beatles.

If you like folk, there's a whole section devoted to it. Remember Julie Felix? She got herself an enviable slot on The Frost Report, didn't she?
