I better not lurk...

Hiya, my name's Dasha but calling me a Total Saikou won't hurt my feelings :) Most of my music knowledge lies in my big passion for Visual Kei but I'm here to keep up on Alt-rock and maybe pop music. I'm particularly fond of Nirvana, The Cure and The Smashing Pumpkins. You might catch me in a rock or pop thread sometime soon. I can't link 'cause I'm new but feel free to add me on Last.fm [MetaKnight999, you can find me in a lot of shoutboxes lol] and Wavy.fm [same username as here].

My favourite genres are Alt-rock, Post-punk, Industrial, and Piko-Piko.

Cool, welcome! Do you like the Raincoats? Do you have a favourite dinosaur? What are you feelings on sporks?

Thanks, glad to be here! I haven't listened to the Raincoats yet but I sure will check them out, thanks for the rec! My favourite dinosaur would probably be the pterodactyl. As a kid, I always thought they were so legit because they could fly. Sporks are very strange to me and I'm really not sure how I feel about them. I'm neutral, I guess.

Raime 07-09-2020 02:15 PM

I have more last.fm followers than you, I'm more certified to be last.fm famous.

Pterodactyl is an excellent choice

Ah, that's more based on the number of people who go into my shoutbox telling me that they see me everywhere or people who recognize me on other sites from nothing else but my Last.fm profile. I mean, even you found me despite a lack of similar artists, yeah?

I only listen to one Visual Kei band - Aicle. They sorta ruined it for me. They set the bar so high that I just can't get into other VK bands.

What are your thoughts on:
  1. eX-Girl
  2. Luminous Orange
  3. TsuShiMaMiRe
  4. Jushofutei Mushoku
  5. Aicle
.

Sigh.

1. Pterodactyls and other pterosaurs are not dinosaurs. I don't know how closely they are related but they are not actual dinosaurs.

2. So far as we know Pterodactyls could not fly, only glide.

My childhood has been ruined... Thanks for the info though, fr. I guess my real favourite dinosaur would be the velociraptor then.

I do listen to Aicle casually, I enjoy them quite a bit. My favorite song is "Que Sera Sera", what a banger. I'm curious, what was your foray in VK like? It's rare for someone who isn't super into the scene to be into an Oshare Kei band (other than maybe An Cafe I guess) over a big name like X Japan or Dir en Grey [when they identified as VK]. Is Oshare Kei your favourite sub-style? Did you check out the other scenes, such as Kote or Angura? Those are predominantly where my love lies, especially Kote Kei!

1. I have never heard of them. Noise rock, eh? Not my usual, but might be worth a look into
2. I've definitely heard of Luminious Orange but I haven't listened to them yet. I think I'll check them out, I do like me some shoegazin'
3. Heard of these girls, did listen once (according to Last.fm) but that was a long time ago... Remember them being cool, though
4. Never heard of them, sorry!

I haven't heard of any of those scenes, or genres. This is the first song I came across and is my favorite by them. Hammerhead and C to Saprano are great songs too.

... and they're so much more

They claim to hail from the planet Kero Kero. They are described as psychedelic, space rock, jazz fusion, jagged alternating vocal harmonies, sugary synthesiser pop, punk, prog, epic/atmospheric, noise-rock, wavering three-part a cappella, borderline operatic vocals, often in the space of a single song. Live performances are known to include home-made costumes, synchronised robot dancing and frog-related items. Enthusiastic supporters include Mike Patton and Jello Biafra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EX-Girl
Back to the Mono Kero (2001) and Endangered Species (2004) are my favorite albums by them.

Funny thing, (don't take this the wrong way) Rie Takeuchi doesn't consider herself playing Shoegaze. But despite that Luminous Orange was the band that got me into Shoegaze.

TsuShiMaMiRe are great. They sing about Grapefruits, done video where they're on cooking show. I'm not certain but it seems Japanese alt Rock bands do a lot of food themed stuff.

That's OK, they are hard to find on YouTube.

Do you listen to:
  1. Shonen Knife
  2. Number Girl
  3. My Dead Girlfriend
  4. Plastic Girl in Closet
  5. Mass Of Fermenting Dregs

I see, I was a little intrigued because I think the real genius lies within the old school VK stuff. Like Aicle is great, don't get me wrong, but if you think that's the best VK has to offer then stuff like Dir en Grey, Luna Sea or Malice Mizer would blow your mind. That's just my opinion though. It's Kote Kei so it sounds very, very different from new school Kei like Oshare but I think you might like it. Here are some vids you can check out if you're curious by what I mean/am talking about:

I've casually listened to all those bands but Number Girl and My Dead Girl Girlfriend. I'm particularly fond of Plastic Girl in Closet, my friend recommended me their "Toy" album and I enjoyed the listen

Can't believe I missed this. Pterodactyls most likely ate fish and not large prey.

I can't even anymore.

Lucem Ferre 07-11-2020 03:47 PM

When did you start taking dinosaurs so seriously?

The Batlord 07-11-2020 04:14 PM

Since Jurassic Park the movie came out in 1993 when I was six or seven. That is a serious answer btw. I am only half jokingly offended by the Pteranodon inaccuracies. I would literally make these corrections to people in real life as they glared at me.

I feel this, I would have done exactly the same as a kid (I probably have on multiple occasions, I was an obnoxious little smartass). Sadly I've forgotten most of my dinosaur knowledge along with my mythology knowledge, so now I'm one of those people young me would glare at. I still have a dinosaur encyclopedia somewhere. I'm going to dig it up when I'm back in Holland

Since the Great Pterodactyl/Bat Air Wars of the Late Cretaceous period.

Best dinosaur is the Liopleurodon, hands down.

But since you're the dinosaur expert here, can you tell me whether or not birds today could be considered dinosaurs? I've had a long running debate with my sibling about this - me taking the position that they are not.

Liopleurodon is not a dinosaur, goddammit.

And yes, birds are dinosaurs. Dinosaurs from back then are often referred to as non-avian dinosaurs to distinguish them from birds.

Honestly, I didn't realize the difference until I read this thread. I feel as if my entire life has been a lie.

I'll take the Spinosaurus then.

And if we're talking about non-actual-dinosaur dinosaurs I've gotta give it to Quetzalcoatl. Imagine something the size of a giraffe soaring over your head.

It's probably less impressive in real life. Harry Potter does not look impressed in that picture.

The Batlord 07-14-2020 01:27 PM

Does that mean you're an even uglier piece of **** IRL?

He looks more like John Lennon during his lost weekend. After drinking a few Brandy Alexanders Lennon starts seeing Quetzalcoatls.
