Hi I'm Rob.

I'm a fan of alternative, experimental and psychedelic music, though I listen to a bit in every genre.

I'm a writer, musician and photographer.

Nice to be here.

jadis 04-02-2022 09:14 AM

Welcome man, sounds like you found the right place.

Who's your favorite Winnipeg-based filmmaker?

Thank you.

The only one I'm familiar with is Guy Maddin. Do you know of others?

Hi Rob. Welcome. You might want to reconsider your replying to posts that are years old.

I'm a massive Maddin fan. A few years ago I went to see the Tales From the Winnipeg Film Group docu when it was playing at the Montreal film festival, a very interesting documentary about the scene's beginnings. The one other film from the group I've seen is John Paizs's Crime Wave from 1985, a seminal cult classic definitely worth watching.

And there is this documentary about Guy which is a masterpiece in its own right. Narrated by Tom Waits!

Neat, neat... I really should become more familiar with the Winnipeg film scene as it's a scene I want to be a part of. I want to write and direct and be a part of the soundtrack.

I'll check out "Tales From the Winnipeg Film Group."

Hallo there, Robert.

Have you got any weird musical recommendations to share?

Sure, hundreds, where's a good place to post a list?

That's an ambition worth pursuing. They're great, seem very nice people too (those I met at the screening).

I think here would be a good place for a few. You can always repost someplace else at a later occasion.

It doesn't quite strike me as a good reply to my previous question:

But grats on namedropping a lot of bands and artists in one post. Who doesn't enjoy a nice wall of text? I hope it didn't take you long.

Oh, well, it's mostly weird stuff that I would recommend, the ones at the top being the most recommended.

No, it didn't, I copypasta'd my portfolio website.

Marie Monday 04-03-2022 04:07 PM

eh at least it's effective, it gives a clear idea of your music taste. I like quite a few things on your list

So if you could pick out one or two recommendations and briefly describe what you like about them, how would that go? :)

Okay.

Both Boards of Canada and Tim Hecker have incredible production values, BoC if you want a psychedelic nostalgia trip, which will be especially nostalgic if you grew up with Film Board of Canada documentaries. If you enjoy shoegaze and distortion in general, Tim Hecker. Mr. Hecker makes beautiful ethereal atmospheres drenched in distortion and glitch.

I’m sorry I’m not really good at describing music. Usually when asked I just talk about the genre. BoC is ambient techno meets ambient breakbeat, they’re technically not IDM but people often lump them in with IDM so I do too. Tim Hecker is experimental ambient.

Oh and BoC makes a lot of reference to the occult and cults which gives them extra points.

jadis 04-05-2022 06:23 AM

Personally I love this kind of lists and it's a great one. Lots of great 90s stuff I have soft spots for. The Sneaker Pimps for instance, what a great, sexy first album

Also great to be reminded of DJ Spooky, I'm a big fan

Lol Magyar Posse? We're not insane clowns, just Hungarians.

rostasi 04-05-2022 11:56 AM

Yawning "loudly" is Ambient/Sound Art.

The Batlord 04-05-2022 12:06 PM

Agreed on post-rock but you can leave ambient alone, you cock goblin.

robhr 04-05-2022 12:11 PM

Yeah anything with “post” in the name is almost as pretentious as IDM. It’s not for everybody.

robhr 04-05-2022 12:21 PM

You may like 65daysofstatic, they’re very un-boring post rock.

You'll discover that the term "pretentious" is thrown around a lot here.
It's kind of a "go-to" word used indiscriminately.

I predict I’ll hear it a lot.

And you have the balls to call anyone else pretentious? Hey guys I heard on the internet that a cricket in your house isn't just annoying actually!

jadis 04-05-2022 01:49 PM

Agree that most "post rock" is watery nonsense but I've learned to like Mogwai and Godspeed/Silver Mt.Zion. Godspeed are tremendous live

robhr 04-05-2022 01:55 PM

At first when I branched out from indie rock a bit I figured every other post-rock band was just a poor man’s GY!BE or Mogwai but eventually I dove in.

I also figured why listen to other shoegaze if I had My Bloody Valentine so clearly I wasn’t very good at listening to music.

jadis 04-05-2022 03:29 PM

Fair enough

what Cage got rooms to provide is music too, you oaf (MB taught me that). and music is not just something like canned ambience

robhr 04-06-2022 02:36 PM

Post-rock haters check out my thread in alternative & indie.

I can't link it I don't have enough posts but it's titled "Perhaps I can make you enjoy post-rock..."
