Best Drummer

Who's your fav out of these?

cherrychic 11-27-2005 08:06 AM

don't know em

Soundgardener 11-27-2005 01:01 PM

Jones did some crazy stuff with hi-hats and is a monstrous influence.

jazzfromhell 11-27-2005 05:45 PM

All great drummers, Papa Jo is one of the most influential drummers in jazz, as Soundgardener said. Technically, Buddy Rich is the best of the three, in my opinion. However, my favorite jazz drummer is Elvin Jones.

i love elvin too

wheres jack dejohnette? hes not the best but hes in the top ten

and philly joe, gene krupa, poncho sanchez (although hes not really a drummer)

my favourite drummer though, would have to be paul motian - love his work

jazzfromhell 11-27-2005 08:07 PM

I'm a big fan of DeJohnette and Motian, too. I'm assuming Sanchez is a conga player, I know little to nil about latin music.

the only one I have ever heard of is Pappa Jo Jones, so I will go with him on that vote! :yeah:

Music Man 11-30-2005 09:50 PM

Louie Bellson should be on the list. Duke Ellington and Count Basie both called him the best drummer in the world.

Soundgardener 12-22-2005 06:47 PM

Rich is an obvious choice for many. He had an amazing style, interesting personality, and the ability to improvise. The guy could keep a steady beat at age TWO for christ's sake! Then again, there are so many amazing jazz drummers from that 30s era, Krupa, Webb, Jones, not to mention early pioneers like Baby Dodds.
