I think "post rock meets jazz" is accurate.
Their last two albums were great, although I think What We Must is a little overrated due to their magic carpet ride of fame. |
"I could have Killed him in the sauna" is an awesome song...and i liked What We Must a fair bit more than The Stix.

Not too riveting.

Having said that, I also think What We Must as an album is their weakest release. The title track is great but the rest of the disc doesn't really do much or go anywhere to my ears. One thing that really stands out as odd to me though is that whenever I hear that song or album I immediately think of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album. There's something about the lush production and the amount of instrumental layers that go into the JJ tracks that just triggers that connection in my head. Still haven't been able to score a copy of 'One Armed Bandit' but if that title track is any indication the band has been moving in a slightly Zappa-esque direction recently. Dunno about you, but that's pretty awesome in my book. Enjoy the show. |
Thanks! "One Armed Bandit" is indeed a brilliant album, and from the looks of their recent setlists, they'll be playing most if not all of it (which I don't mind). The title-track is the stand-out, though.
This is my first time seeing them, so i don't really know what to expect in terms of grandeur and sound. All other jazz concerts I've been to have been bigger venues, and knowing this venue (an old boat house) I know it's not too big. |
ooOOOOoo Intimate venue hehehe when is the show?
Don't expect the typical jazz crowd nor the typical behaviour. They didn't frown on audience participation in the past, clap along, dance, hoot, holler, whistle, cheer, so long as you're expressing positivity in light of their music they'll be appreciative. No need to sit there with your hands crossed over your lap waiting to politely applaud after each major solo or piece. They also sound HUGE. |
The 27th, so about a month.
I know the crowd that usually come to these kinds of shows, plus there'll probably be a lot of people from the music program where I study. A lot of students and local profilic people in other words. Sounds good! It's a standing venue, though, with limited seating. |

^haha, true.
Concert is a no go, though. I was betting on some exception on their 18+ policy, but they're not letting anything slip this time. I'm gutted to put it mildly. |
