Female Singer/Piano Soloist

I was doing some door to door sales the other week when I came across a house that was blaring some music (probably through a VERY expensive system, given the fidelity and magnitude) and the music was something that I didn't think I'd ever like. It was simply a female singer. I can't remember specifically, but I'm pretty sure she was only accompanied by a piano. It was a slow, somewhat dreary tone, but crystal clear. It was sad and wistful and absolutely beautiful. I didn't even listen to the words. It was the kind of thing that you'd slit your wrists to, or listen to when you found out someone you really really loved was cheating on you. I'm not really familiar with that genre, mostly I stick to goth/metal/rock/alt. What I heard was a bit blues-ish, and a bit jazz-ish. So if anyone has any suggestions about artists that match what I've described, I'd love to hear from you. Oh, and it wasn't something like Tori Amos, I am familiar with her.

Almost Lover- a fine frenzy?

Crow, doctor blind is really close to the type, except the girl I hear was REALLY pouring her heart and soul into it, she wasn't singing softly, or screaming, just using her full voice.

dollface, fine frenzy is a bit closer to the mark, but what I heard had a bit more con motto, a bit more consistent and aggresive.
What would you call this style of music anyways?

Could be someone like Paula Cole or Sarah Mclachlan.
