Find something you like influenced by Jazz.
First find something you dig influenced by jazz and then research their influences. Hip-hop's got tones of jazz samples and usually will give props to that artist. I can't remember the name of the tunes but Tribe Called Quest has a tune with with samples fo "Red Clay" by Herbie Han****. What are some artist you dig with heavy jazz influence.

You should check out Miles Davis "kind of blue". It's the most approachable if you haven't listened to jazz much. I listening to it on my dellditty right now.

Well, my favorite jazz (and pretty much the only jazz I have been exposed to) is off of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. Man, is it good...

That's how I was introduced to jazz (although now that I think about it, I'm not even sure that it's jazz). Great stuff, though. :thumb: |
My personal favourites include Herbie Han****, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea.

pete townshend was a huge fan of Mose Allison and the Who actually covered some of his songs (in a more rocky way) - Young Man Blues and Eyesight to the Blind (actually a sonny boy williamson song but covered by Mose Allison and then the Who)

i'm a huge fan of tribal tech - if you're coming into jazz from a fairly rocky/grungy perspective (as i have and am) they're an incredible introduction to jazz fusion - the diversity and colour of jazz backed up by the raw power of rock. scott henderson (their guitarist) is now one of my favourites. i can also vouch for the goodness of miles davis, herbie hanc0ck and pat metheny. but i think boris jawaka above knows what he's talking about
Edit: But of course, how could i forget Weather Report! Thanks Music Man. I have "Heavy Weather" which is great. |
"Time Out"--Dave Brubeck
"Kind of Blue"--Miles Davis "Latin America"--Gato Barbieri "I Sing the Body Electric"--Weather Report |
