Electric Blues

It's just a genre that intrigues me and often when I hear something described as Blues it's a sound I like, but my ignorance of what really constitutes The Blues is holding me back from finding stuff.
I don't want to just trawl through wikipedia because a lot of their classification seems a bit off.

So any essential albums I should look into? Would be much appreciated...

Not a bad start:

I like just about anything by Buddy Guy - particular favorites being early Chess records; "Feels Like Rain" or "Damn Right I Got The Blues"; and the enigmatic but beautiful "Sweet Tea"

Also Elmore James is wonderful, and the Leon Russell-produced sides by Freddy King

Muddy Waters "Hard Again" - great album start to finish. Just go get it.

Some of my personal favorites are:

Howlin' Wolf - Sings the blues
Jimmy Reed - Rockin' with Reed
Albert King - Years gone by

and if you like more recent stuff then Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood is a good one as well.

Everybody's got great suggestions so far. Albert King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, etc.

But check out an album by John Hammond called "Wicked Grin". It's a split he did with Tom Waits, and it's all covers of Waits' songs, handpicked from various albums. It's fantastic.

Also, check out the album "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James, and the song "Hard Time Killin' Floor" by Skip James. Some good, old timey blues for you.

What are some good electric blues artists to check out?

joderu95 10-09-2009 06:49 PM

R.L. Burnside - Mr. Wizard
Paul Butterfield Blues Band - The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Lots of good albums.
Fenton Robinson - Somebody Loan Me a Dime
Little Walter - The Essential Little Walter

And anybody with the name King, Son(ny), Slim, Big, Little or Lightnin'.

And if you can get Pandora try the Electric Blues station in the genres section.
