Thanks. I dont know if this counts because I know little about jazz but I rather like Louis Armstrong.

Also does anyone know a good starting point for Weather Report/Jaco Pastorius? Thanks.

I would go with Heavy Weather for Jaco era Weather Report. The Birthday Concert is imo his best solo album

i'm a big rock and punk fan myself, but i'm trying to expand my horizon.

Can you guys point me towards some good jazz & blues songs & bands?
Like good stuff to start of with?

I would really appreciate it, greetz

Not sure the type of Blues You're after and seeing as your a Rock/ punk fan might i suggest you start with some Powerhouse Blues.

A few to start with which are worth having a listen to are,
Kandye Cane, ( female vocal ). Dave Hole ( Australian ) this guy is one of the best slide guitarists around dose a couple of Jimmy Hendrix numbers rather well. Johnny Winter,Kenny Wayne Shepherd,Rory Gallagher,Stevie Ray Vaughan & Walter Trout just to name a few.

Cheers, Mountainmaniac.

Jazz suggestions

I love jazz, I have seen it in the bargain bin at SuperWalmart, the local gas mart during Christmas holidays with jazzy Christmas tunes and in restaurant listings for Chicago, Illinois on the Internet. None of the stores were charging top dollar for the jazz discs, or CDs, yet it is supremely good. A great place famous for its jazz, is Bourbon Street in New Orleans, LA. There are piano bars, all day bars and probably at least half of the bars there play jazz music, the main reason this is a famous location. The place is like a couple to four blocks long and also has disco, techno, pop and etc. :soapbox:

There is a particular store called the Music Stand, available through mail order that explains genres of music as well as keys. They also sell karaoke supplies which include some jazz.

Try these:

Charlie Hunter Trio - Mistico
Garage a Trios - Outre Mer and Emphasizer

I find that jazz in our time isn't as bad as people chalk it up to be. Some prime examples would be the two groups I listed above. If you're looking for some jazz with a twist, check out some Tin Hat. There should be a thread I started about it in the Avant-Garde/Experimental forum. Yes, I'm hyping my own thread. No one really cares.

Good thread. I was going to post a thread asking for recommendations about jazz, its one of the few popular music styles I havent really given much checking out.

:hphones:Like Satch said, it's so vast it's easy to get lost. But these are some of the things that started to broaden my horizons. I love guitar players so I lean away from the jazz horns, probably more than I should.
