I am interested in jazz from the 1920s. Can someone recommend me some artists from that time period that are good? I think a lot of them were orchestras.

I don't like big band swing or later Coltrane Bird Miles Davis stuff, just that exuberant 1920s stuff. Is it Dixieland? I am not sure but I am talking about Ain't She Sweet and Sweet Georgia Brown etc- just rollicking fun music to my ears.

Id recommend Joe pass For any jazz guitar fan. He's great.

Quote:

Recorded live for an enthusiastic audience at London's 100 Club on June 30 and July 14 of 1970 during House's final European tour, Delta Blues and Spirituals is a great last look at a true blues legend. Though Son House would live another 18 years after this recording, he would only perform for five more, and by most accounts he was only a shadow of his former self relatively shortly after this collection's release. Thus, Delta Blues and Spirituals remains one of the last vibrant documents of one of the most essential fathers of Delta blues at the top of his game.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...2B-2BPhoto.jpg

August 17, 1939 – August 12, 1997

Quote:

"All the Chicago Blues Festival needed was a hero. Enter Luther Allison, the expatriate bluesman flew in Saturday afternoon from his adopted home base of Paris, and hours later made the 12th Annual Blues Festival his personal showcase. From the time Allison tore into Soul Fixin' Man, he captivated the crowd. Responding to pleas of 'Don't hurt me, Luther' and 'Burn it down,' he played some of the hottest riffs that ever rained down from the main stage. Every guitar solo was an eloquent statement delivered with searing, lightning-quick precision."

I have a lot of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, etc.

Some underground and less famous jazz/blues artists are:

-Bill Cantos: piano and vocals..he does a lot of trio stuff. His music is pretty fresh and writes many original.
-Kristin Korb: bassist and vocalist, she used to be in L.A. but moved to Denmark about a year ago. She's influenced by Brazilian/Portuguese style and does a workshop there about once a year.
-Sheila Jordan is well known in the jazz world but is not as infamouse as Ella or Billie. She has a very unique/corky style. She has excellent nuances and expression in her sound.
-Blossom Deary. Classic jazz piano/vocalist. If you haven't heard her stuff before you might begin to listen and recognize it. A lot of places play her music because it's akin to Frank Sinatra feel. Fairly mellow.
-Gerald Clayton looks pretty young, but don't let that fool you. He has been nominated for many Grammys. Most of his stuff is trio. He plays the upright bass.
-Esperanza Spalding: another bass and vocalist. Very ecclectic, Latin/jazz infussion. Great music to listen to- very upbeat and expressive.

These are just a few suggestions. There are so many underground type artists in jazz. It's so fun to go hear some of the greats online or others in concert and be able to hear how they are influenced by different artsist in their style and interpretation. :)

BeccaLynn 04-28-2012 03:56 PM

Fats Waller was a great pianist/composer during the 20s. His style of unique to that time. Check it out and see if you like his stuff. :) Here are some of his most famous titles "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me". Hope this helps you in your search for great 20s music!

I would really appreciate it, greetz

Maybe the best place to start for blues is the great Muddy Waters, king of the Chicago blues, with Muddy's music you can hear the origins of Rock n Roll. Of course he is just one name, but just one listen to his show closer, "Got My Mojo Working" will show you what I mean...................... Muddy  Waters :afro:

Dizzy Gillespie's pretty good. Start there. Also try Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. If you like jazz at all, you'll love them.
