Ascension's better imo, but Sun Ship is probably a better place to start as it's more accessible.

You mean start for free jazz? I'll take your word.

Frownland 05-24-2016 02:52 PM

For free jazz I'd say that one and Ornette Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come. Probably Cecil Taylor's Nefertiti, the Beautiful One Has Come as well.

How many jazz albums do you think you've heard?

Umm. At least 500. I don't keep track of that kind of thing.

JGuy Grungeman 05-24-2016 03:02 PM

Didn't think you would. Just wondring about the estimate.

I know a musician you might like.

He has different music every album.

Taking Frown's advice, I'm playing Sun Ship.

Also, taking Frown's advice, I'm playing Ascension. I think it's widely known amongst jazz fans that Ascension has two versions. I'm going with the originally released edition 1, because my music philosophy is that the original release is the real album. I guess I consider edition ii to be a separate album with the same title.

They're paired together as parts one and two, generally.
