I don't know if I said this before, but I really like Art Tatum. He was such a virtuosic pianist, playing his own jazzy renditions of everything from classical to showtunes. He was revered by all the great jazz pianists and even classical pianists like Vladimir Horowitz.

i like this blind guy called Marcus Roberts who does really good interpretations of Monk, Jelly Roll Morton and the Duke

his own compositions are quite good as well

I don't know what it is with visual impairement and keyboardists. I myself am visually impaired and play the keyboard, but I know of at least 5 professional pianists who are blind or have vision problems.

- Stevie Wonder
- "Blind" Boone (Old-time jazz pianist)
- Ray Charles
- Marcus Roberts
- Milton Little

For me Art Tatum just bowled me over when I 1st heard him when I was very young. My older Bro played me some old 78s of his and it floored me. He still does. His technique & sense of re-harmonizing songs was astounding. Errol Garner was another one who was quite a unique pianist.

Jedey 02-20-2011 10:44 AM

Red Garland is pretty groovy.

The Thelonious Monk tune Well, You Needn't from Monk's Music is one of my favorites of his, at about the 2:20 mark in the song you hear Monk shout out "Coltrane, Coltrane", this was recorded when John Coltrane was still on heroin and he had nodded out for a bit when he heard his name he woke up and played a great solo.

chanpyn 02-20-2011 11:06 AM

Herbie Han**** might be worth a try.

bahama 02-21-2011 11:27 AM

For something older, unique and just very cool check out cornetist Bix Beiderbecke's piano solo/composition of "In a Mist" (YouTube it as I can't post urls quite yet)

It is from the late 1920's and pretty far ahead of it's time harmonically

That is pretty good. Honestly, I don't think I even knew that Bix played piano, always thought of him as strictly a horn guy.

mannny 02-21-2011 09:54 PM

All great pianists mentioned here. I'd like to add a favorite of mine, Erroll Garner. He has a really distinct style and always uses the entire piano. I love all his ballads but his most known album is probably "Concert By the Sea".

His most famous composition "Misty":

bahama 02-22-2011 09:54 AM

@Janszoon-yea... he was an amazing cornetist as you know. Died too way young

Great Errol clip Manny. He made it look so effortless

bahama 02-22-2011 10:03 AM

Almost forgot about the great Teddy Wilson. Check out any of his playing with the Benny Goodman groups for starters.

musiclistsareus 03-01-2011 11:36 PM

amen to Tyner, Monk, Han****, Jarrett, Evans and Tatum. Nat King Cole and Ray Charles were also pretty amazing--though they seem to be remembered more for their singing they were both steeped in jazz piano.

bahama 03-03-2011 11:32 AM

was gonna also mention Nat Cole. Obv his piano was overshadowed by his voice but he was a great pianist

Danny88 11-13-2011 12:18 PM

Oscar Peterson.

sonar1 11-15-2011 09:56 AM

Hank Jones

Stephen 11-15-2011 05:09 PM

I quite like Red Garland, especially the albums he did with John Coltrane and the album Groovy by the Red Garland Trio.

landed87 12-21-2011 05:47 AM

i know he's not traditional jazz player, but is very talented and may have been overlooked: JAMIE CULLUM..?
(it wont let me post pictures or videos yet)

jazz website 12-26-2011 03:38 PM

Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarret, Robert Glasper, Jason Moran, Art Tatum, McCoy Tyner

muleonmushrooms 12-27-2011 10:12 PM

so many great ones. has anyone mentioned Ahmad Jamal? or Ethan Iverson of 'The Bad Plus'?

TockTockTock 03-08-2012 12:43 AM

Bump...

Been really digging Fats Waller's music lately. Very versatile jazz pianist who adds a bit of variety into his compositions... His stage persona was also a bit weird/quirky, but I like that.

I've been listening to a lot of Art Tatum (who Waller referred to as "god" at one point) and Cecil Taylor as well. So... any fans of these guys?

haakoncon 01-22-2013 02:12 PM

May I suggest Jamie Cullum. Amazing jazz musician from England.

FRED HALE SR. 01-22-2013 03:59 PM

No mention of Kenny Kirkland very surprising.

I know he played with Sting and thats taboo for jazz fans but the guy can flatout dominate the keys.

Rjinn 01-22-2013 04:01 PM

Ah something I haven't really considered. I'd like to delve into some Jazz pianists.

<- Needs to listen to more Jazz.

FRED HALE SR. 01-24-2013 10:47 AM

Didn't see the fantastic Earl Hines on the thread either. Obviously channeling some Monk on this one. I love this recording from 64.

When it comes to jazz pianists there's Thelonious Monk and then everyone else.

No offense, Duke.

McCoy Tyner is probably my favourite these days. I'm also a huge fan of Alexander Von Schlippenbach.

There really isn't anyone topping Thelonis Monk, at least that I've heard.

Technically or creatively? I'd argue that Art Tatum is technically more proficient and Red Garland's style is more unique.

Music_Spin 01-11-2016 02:50 PM

Bud Powell is someone everyone into jazz should check out.

Music_Spin 01-11-2016 02:50 PM

Also Art Tatum

There is this young pianist from Indonesia names Joey Alexander who is an absolute monster.

Harry Wilson 11-14-2016 05:13 AM

Justin Kauflin - I like his music so much!

Eric Romano 11-21-2016 03:52 AM

Herbie Hancock

Born in Chicago, Illinois, his parents named him after the singer and actor Herb Jeffries.
Hancock had a mainstream hit with the Grammy-award winning instrumental single "Rockit" from the album Future Shock. It was the first jazz hip-hop song and became a worldwide anthem for the breakdancers and for the hip-hop culture of the 1980s.
He's granted with the Miles Davis Award, by the Montreal International Jazz Festival, 1997

JiggleMonster 01-21-2017 12:27 PM

Jamie Cullum is more of a pop Jazz artist from the UK, but he is an excellent pianist. Check him out.

GatheringRain 03-02-2017 10:40 AM

This is the first time I've listened to this album and OMG it blew me away. I need moooooooore!!!!!
