Default Donald Byrd

Hi guys,

I've just bought an LP by Donald Byrd called 'A New Perspective' after hearing a track called Cristo Redentor on a Blue Note best of compilation.

I'm no jazz expert but occasionally I buy the odd Jazz LP and this one was purchased on the strength of this one song.

It's due to arrive mid week but wondered if anyone could recommend similar artists and more specifically Jazz albums to progress from this one.

thanks for any assistance.

If you like Donald Byrd's style of trumpet playing, check out Tom Browne, The Blackbyrds early albums especially Flying start and City life.

I have an album by Donald Byrd, not sure which one, it could be the one you have just bought, which involves extensive use of a choir. I enjoyed it a lot the first few times I played it, but eventually it began to feel like a sort of tonal novelty to me and I haven't played it again though I expect to revisit eventually. The ideas and concepts were great but it didn't hold up for me for regular listening. But as I said I'll give it another shot eventually.

Cristo Redentor is very good, great song, great taste!

Check out Donald Byrd - Think Twice

Not trumpet, but excellent guitar and similar emotion to Cristo with Kenny Burrell (Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg) - Last Night when we were Young
sorry no youtube link

And, GREAT jazz complilation if your looking to explore blue note jazz...
