Seriously, I just got to the song "Blue In Green"... I love it.

Also, on Last.fm the top Jazz artists have some like Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, are they your traditional jazz or not really?

Seriously, Mile Davis' Bitches Brew is far and away the best fusion album ever recorded and pretty close to being the only album from the sub-genre really worth owning. Check it out. You'll be happy you did.

I still go through various websites "top 100 jazz albums" lists. Like most things of that nature there's usually some stuff that's grossly overrated, but it is a great way to feel out the genre expecially considering how huge it is.

Thanx for this post, I too really like Jazz but its no-where near my era so my knowledge is pretty limited. I've alway really liked Mile Davis however, one of the best trumpet players I've heard!

haha, tough question. The funny thing about Jazz is that there's way more to it than people think. If you like traditional jazz, listen to the standards. The more you listen, the more you realise there's so many subgenres and types and styles.

If you really want to do you research, there are certain names you should know. First, the great female jazz singers: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan. Then there are certain jazz composers you should give a listen: Miles Davis, John Coltrane... but there's still a big difference between big band jazz and jazz trios, between latin and funk. It's such an ecclectic genre. Some jazz is just simple 2-5-1 progressions, other jazz is really technical crazy stuff.

Personally, I like jazz guitar. So I listen to guys like Joe Pass and Pat Martino.

If you like more contemporary stuff like jazz fusion, listen to guitarists like John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, or bands like Weather Report.

If you like the smooth stuff, listen to Larry Carlton.

Anyway, if you can follow my crazy ramblings at all, I hope that gives you some names to start with. This is all jsut my advice, these are the people I like and think are important. Another bit of advice - if you want to discover music YOUTUBE IT XD

Alright so I am really getting into Monk, Coltran, and Miles Davis as of late. I think I might check out that Corea person/band next or Charles Mingus.

Also, what kind of jazz would you guys say this is? And also who would I look to...?

I was also listening to this college radio and the dj said it was ambient jazz/funk music. I could definitely tell there was a jazz influence in the music. Is there even a sub-genre such as ambient jazz/funk music. Not sure if that is even the best description for it but oh well...

Definitely going to check them out.

Also, lately I am really enjoying the hard bop stuff.

And although he is a little more in the blues genre, I have been listening to a lot of Tom Waits as of late.
