I'd have to agree with you there (at least out of the albums I've heard). I'm surprised your post is the first mention of that album. Reminds me a lot of Zappa in places.

I've been binging on Mahavishnu all day. Birds of Fire and Inner Mounting Flame are ****ing amazing. Except for Open Country Joy. That song sucks.

After a steady diet of Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, hearing Mahavishnu for the first time (Between Nothingness and Eternity) in 1974 blew my ****ing mind. Haven't been the same since.

Check out "From Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust" by Ken Scott. He spends a lot of time talking about recording Birds of Fire.
