Ah ok, Smooth Jazz uses a lot of diatonic scales flavored with the BeBop scales to add 'outside' notes. This style is a very 'safe' jazz style that demands a command of tension and resolution with the emphasis on staying within the key (consonance).

Sounds complicated. So your playing to the chord and from key to key?

Hmm . . . that alone is a study in Jazz theory. Some teachers refer to this as the Cry Me a River theory.

Actually a lot of Smooth/Cool Jazz has solo sections where a vamp is set up enabling the soloist to remain in one key (almost like Modal jazz).

With the harmonic structure being stagnant, the soloist is now free to play outside the tonal center, superimpose changes, or color the vamp how (s)he sees fit.

I've only been playing for a few years this time around (absolutely love it, I wish I never quit) and am still making it complicated enough without adding more to it.
Thanks
