Madaleine Peyroux

This lady sounds like some Jazz singer and I can't think of who. Can someone download something like "dance me to the end of love" or "don't cry baby (solo version)" and tell me who's voice she evidently stole?

Its a tie between Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, but I'm leaning toward Ella.

I thought Fitzgerald too but I was told Billie Holiday by a friend (whos traditionally light years behidn the curve so I was too shocked that she knew her to be argumentitive)

I think she sounds like Billie Holiday, and many critics have made that very comparison. However, one of the write-ups on her says she brushes off such comparisons.

Her style is very much like Billy holiday, but her vocal timbre is too different.

its amazing how her voice sounds like a black singer but shes white - no offence meant or anything - i think shes great, shes sort of like a more jazz orientated norah jones

::sigh:: Norah Jones. You know they called her Jazz because for the majority she is, but I think anything that was jazzy with mass appeal was sort of a chance to get people to be able to say they liked Jazz.

I don't think she classified herself as jazz necciserily but she has that flavoring. She constantly mentions Willie Nelson as a huge influcence (and plays in a cover band Little Willies) but has never (in my readings) has classified herself.

The we had the people who wanted to change her, either because they were jazz purists and into their sobbery, or because they didn't want to be caught dead liking something as stuffy as Jazz.

When you say she's more Jazz oriented, to me that solidifies my opinion that she is just drafting off the greats. I don't think she's very original.

I know this will get me shot and burned, but old Jazz lyrics have to be the most abstract and general of any genre. I don't know, I don't dislike her, but I think Jones is a much better singer/songwriter.

i agree with you - i dont exactly think she's jazz just like people call james brown jazz - its not jazz but people do classify her as jazz mostly because they cant comprehend the real stuff but want to say they like jazz - maybe its a status thing or something???
