Calling all jazzheads

The official rec threads seem to be producing sporadically of late, so I'm creating a new thread for guaranteed results.

Here's the situation--I'm buying a present for a beginner jazz enthusiast, and I basically need to know what to purchase. My jazz knowledge is limited at best.

He's familiar with a few of the greats--loves Dizzy, Brubeck, Miles, Bird, etc. However, he's not a fan of Coltrane (

) or free jazz in general.

What two albums could I get him that
- he probably hasn't heard
- he's pretty much guaranteed to enjoy (yes, I know there's no such thing as a "guarantee" in music)
- are likely to be found in a used record store on CD

The store stocks everything from Cherry Poppin' Daddies to the Carpenters, so the last criteria isn't a big deal. Greatest hits albums are fine.

Which Coltrane does he say he doesn't like? Because there's a huge difference between Ascension Coltrane, Giant Steps Coltrane, and Blue Train Coltrane. I really like Grachan Monchor III's Evolution. A more modern album he might dig is Jim Black's Endangered Blood.

Apparently, he actually digs Blue Train. Ascension, not so much. He admires Giant Steps for its technical difficulty. Dunno if he likes it or not, though.

Hiromi ****ing rules.

Might as well throw in Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch! out there since it's one of the best jazz albums of all time. How could you possibly hate it? Even fuddy duddies like Trollheart love it.

Out To Lunch is great but it's hardly a sure bet for someone lukewarm on free jazz.

I had considered this, but I think that stylistically it's not like many other free jazz records and falls closer to hard bop.
