Burlesque, please!
I'm in swing music mode today, and I can't stop listening to this sexy carnie song (to clarify: "sexy" as an adjective for "song" not "carnie"... I don't personally find carnies sexy... which isn't to say that I judge those who do, of course)...
I'm loosely classifying this as "Burlesque" and posting this thread in the jazz forum since the predominant sound is obviously swing... I would really appreciate any other recommendations with similar sounds. Can you believe this snappy little number only has 25 hits on youtube?! |
The link doesn't work, for me at least.
Something like that? |

And in return for your splendid recommendaton, I will post an alternative link for Hoochie Coochie Girls... Because you'd probably really enjoy its subtle dark flavor... |

The Tiger Lillies are also pretty burlesque, now that I think of it. |
Not many tunes by these guys on the tubes, but they are in a similar realm:
These are also great examples: |

Such a great band!
I discovered this band called D.on Darox & The Melody Joy Bakers on my last trip to New Orleans. Funny thing is they are from California. They're fabulous live! Hope this helps. Check them out on youtube. or Google. I'd post videos but this is my first post.

I've been listening to a lot of circus cabaret again... Found me some intriguingly playful and enjoyable playlists; thought I'd share...
The first playlist is very accordion-heavy (hence the picture obviously); I can listen to this the whole way through on repeat... The next one is a bit darker, with more of a "femme fatal" theme to it... I listened to this on Valentines Day when doing my hair/makeup vintage pin-up style (it came out flawless btw...Coincidence? I think not! ;)) |

F*ck you YouTube

Perfection.
(Note to mods: I realize that I've been veering further and further away from jazz/swing and closer to world music as this thread goes on... Feel free to move accordingly, but please notify me if you do, so I will know where to access it. Thanks.) |
I heard somewhere that Elvis took dancing tips from a burlesque dancer. Since then I began to realize that maybe Burlesque is not a forgotten early twentieth century type of dancing, but something that pervades pop culture, whether people are aware of it or not, even today.
I started off with one Burlesque-esque instrumental, then from there the list grew on its own. I have no idea how to order these. I was thinking either have the music or the video in chronological order. The videos have the music overdubbed so they are sorta mix-matched. I am guessing Night Train by Buddy Morrow was probably one of the most popular in the Burlesque style. A few are proper examples and the other videos are add-ons to illustrate the point of Burlesque's influence. So from Cheesecake of the 40s/50s to Go-Go dancing of the 60s to Disco dancing in the 70s (whether art, fashion or dance moves) there is a little bit of burlesque influences in there somewhere. Let There Be Drums - Sandy Nelson Sweet Little Pussycat - Andre Williams & His Orchestra Beaver Shot - Periscopes The Instrumentals - Are You Nervous? Night Train - Buddy Morrow (1952) The Sonics - Psycho a Go-Go (1967) Liar, Liar - The Castaways (1965) Barbara Eden "Spinning Wheel" Raquel Welch: Space-Girl Dance Amii Stewart - Knock On Wood [1979] |
