pastor of muppets 08-13-2005 06:16 AM

yeah i know, stupid title, i cant be fuc ked changing it.....

TheBig3 08-13-2005 11:30 AM

Um, I've only heard watermelon man, and he's usually classified as Jazz, but I never thought of him as such. Maybe because I've only heard one song and whichever song was the first rap song to win an award for MTV.

SATCHMO 08-13-2005 01:21 PM

Yeah, the crossover stuff he's done (Watermelon Man, Chameleon, rockit etc.) is just the tip of the iceberg that is his musical career. He is most definitely a jazz legend.

boris jawaka 08-31-2005 01:55 AM

he is a genius, takin off is one of my favourite jazz albums. when he went fusion he did some great stuff as well

boo boo 09-01-2005 03:04 AM

I like him, a very bold musician, his music has progressed greatly over the past 30 or so years.

Yeah, Head Hunters has some funky tunes on it.

I can`t listen to Rockit anymore without picturing Ronaldinho doing some fancy trick.

Michikawa 11-20-2005 09:06 AM

I adore Herbie's style. He combines traditional jazz with groovy stuff so well that it just makes you smile. One of my favourite live shows is the one where he was grouped with Jack deJohnette, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny. Truly remarkable show.

boris jawaka 11-21-2005 11:55 PM

wow! i need to get that - can you give me the name of the album?

jazzfromhell 11-27-2005 05:52 PM

I've only heard a moderate amount of his stuff, what I've heard is great, although I hear he's kinda sold out (or maybe just decreased in quality) in the past 20-30 years. Anyway, good stuff by him would include his being with Miles Davis throughout the 60's, he played in the second great Miles quintet (with Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams), and stayed with him into his fusion years (Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, etc., although he's joined by other keyboard/piano players on these albums, namely Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea). Of his work under his own name, my favorites are Maiden Voyage and Mwandishi.

boris jawaka 11-27-2005 07:30 PM

im not sure in herbie is on bitches brew

ill have to check though

jazzfromhell 11-27-2005 07:47 PM

Damn, you're right. He's not on the regular versions of either Silent Way or Bitches Brew, I thought he was because I have the complete version of Bitches Brew, which features him on a couple takes. He is on a Tribute to Jack Johnson, Live-Evil, and On the Corner, though, maybe a couple others.

I just found out yesterday that my music teacher use to tour with Herbie Han**** and how in India they met Mick Jagger!!! how ****ing sweet is that!

sarxist 05-12-2007 03:04 PM

Cantaloupe Island is one of the most smooth jazz songs I have listened to. It just has a groove that can't be beat.

Seltzer 06-16-2007 03:34 PM

I just saw Han**** touring with Lionel Loueke, Nathan East and Vinnie Colaiuta in May. That was seriously the best concert I have ever ever been too. Songs came mainly from Maiden Voyage, Head Hunters and his new album. After that I became convinced that Colaiuta is the greatest drummer ever.

Herbie Hanc0ck

Noticed the lack of a Herbie Han**** thread. He deserves one as many already know. Never mind it was under c0ck.

I would say hes one of my favorite Jazz composers, up there with only a few others. Thrust, Head Hunters, and Maiden Voyage are all I have heard but I am slowly expanding on that.

EDIT: Will A mod please fix the bleeped out words.

charliebrwnNC 01-18-2009 07:25 PM

Bulldog 01-19-2009 01:57 AM

I intend to get into some jazz soon (going through a bit of a post-punk blitz at the moment) and when I do I'm gonna start with this guy. Of what I've heard he is an amazing composer.

All I've got is his latest album River, the one which comprises mostly of duets, and it was one of my favourite albums of 2007 - such wonderfully laid back and smooth vibes to the whole thing. This track in particular is pure gold;

I'll definitely be hunting down a few more works of his in future and going from, 'cos frankly my collection of jazz (of all kinds) is pathetic.

Ya bro you def gotta get Headhunters.

Janszoon 01-19-2009 09:54 AM

The only albums I have by Herbie Hancock are Thrust and Future Shock. Both are really good and very different from each other.

Hah I was just about to be a wise ass and deny you but I checked for myself and you're right he's absent. Its just Chick, Zawinul and Larry Young.

Scots_ML 01-29-2009 10:46 AM

A very good Jazz Funk version of Watermelon man can be found here.

Keigh 03-16-2009 08:57 AM

I became a musician because my dad was a Miles fan. Herbie was one of his favorite artists and he always had HH albums and tapes in the house. I found Thrust in my dad's collection one day and the rest was history for me. I was hooked. His 70s electric period was amazing. I found out he was the first platinum-selling jazz artist with the Headhunters album and was the most successful of the fusion artists from Mile's fusion stable at that time.

KelticKalamity 04-02-2009 10:51 PM

Unfortunately Chameleon has been done to death by so many bad jazz bands it's cliche to play it in public now

I still like to listen to Herbie every now and then, though

Mirrorball95 04-13-2009 06:33 PM

This guy is EXCELLENT. I have two of his albums a workmate gave me on a usb stick; 'Sunlight' (1977) & 'Future Shock' (1983). I think 'Sunlight' is the better of the two and I love the cheesy vocoder vocals - it reminds me of Neil Young's 'Trans' album (which I also love). I cant wait to hear more of his stuff but not sure where to go next, any recommendations??

"Come Running to Me" is my fave of of Sunlight. It's actually kind of a semi-standard now. I've heard several bands cover it.

I havent heard Dedication or Sextent yet, I agree Sunlight is excellent and Ive never been bored of it yet.
Ill need to check out the albums you mentioned.

Also since Ive gotten into Jazz in the past few months ago, ive noticed that although Im still very much into all the usual Rock music I started out on,
my current interest (especially the cds I purchased this month) have been 'plagued' (which is probably an inappropriate word) by Jazz.

I have over 20 of Miles Davis' albums now and also I really like Pat Metheny who is a Jazz guitarist (amongst others).

There are loads more jazz artists im into/own albums of (I only mentioned my 2 favourite at the moment) but cant be bothered to list them all right now
