The Marcus King Band

The second I heard this kids vocals I was an instant fan. At 22 years old he's sure got a bright future ahead, save for the industry BS that's already taking it's toll on him. He's got blues in his blood and some pretty hefty jazz chops to throw in the mix too. His transitions are what really stand out for me, from full blown out shredding on his Gibson 335 to pure vocal prowess without even batting an eyelash is one of the most impressive components to his arsenal for this old fart. His backing band is just as impressive as Marcus allows them plenty of room to breathe and showcase their own talents in the scope of the tunes. This is one solid band and I'll be looking forward to hopefully seeing them live someday if they ever get back around to Chicago.

Enough chitchat. To the music!

Here's the tune that hooked me.
This one's from last years JITV session. I get the feeling that him and the old keyboard player (Matt Jennings, I believe) weren't working out. You can see Marcus trying to get him to cut to the bridge/chorus just before his solo. Apparently the dude left the band some time between this and those ^latest^ sessions:

I'll be checking out all (3.5) of his albums and posting up reviews, so stay tuned...

I was expecting it to be centered around guitar wankerism but it’s actually well-crafted and soulful and it’s pleasantly economical and not overly self-indulgent. If all his stuff is like this and avoids the typical barroom jamband bs then right on.

Although I love me some wank from time to time, it's really just all about the groove.

Dude has some talent, for sure. Great find Plankton! Definitely have to download his discography when I get Windows re-installed.

2 listens in and I'm a little wrecked right now. So much heart, and the soul of an 80 year old blues player. I think I'll give it a few more listens before starting on the review.

Uncannily mature musician for his age. An old soul for sure. I love his voice, and the band has chops (especially the horn players). Will be listening to lots more Marcus -- thanks for the rec, Plankton.

Happy to oblige, Ribbons. I'm looking forward to what he'll be doing down the road.
