Default What jazz act are you binging?

I'm going on a Weather Report marathon right now. Just started.

I used to enjoy Weather Report back when I was more into fusion.

I just finished binging Hiromi. Tomorrow I'll begin binging Hermeto Pascoal, to complete my jazz fusion study / top 100. I'll then move onto post-bop.

I just need a couple more albums by a couple more acts before I'm comfortable with a top 100 jazz fusion, a little more Bela Fleck, a little more Henry Threadgill, and then the post-bop marathon.

SOOOO.... apparently... the last post on this thread was over a year ago... seriously? I remember when this place was far more active back on my first account. I spent a good deal of time here. It almost makes me wanna say something controversial just to start a fight.

Anyway, I'm going to binge the works of modern avant-garde jazz band Ahmed. Starting with New Jazz Imagination, and I gotta say... this over repetition of simple, "rusty squeeze box" chopsticks note playing is kind of annoying me. The second act has some more imagination, but nothing that's stirring up an emotional experience. First track is about 4/10 at max, second at 6, so I might give this a 5/10 and put it roughly in the same league as Bob Dylan's Shadows in the Night and Charlie Puth's CHARLIE.

Here's a jazz-related post I made in the Unpopular Music Opinions thread under General Music:

"I haven't heard all of Bitches Brew. But while Miles Davis was certainly an innovator, the constant praise for him, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and a few others to the exclusion of everyone else, gets tiring. It would be healthy for those who want to see jazz stay alive and prosper to check out the work of others, including living jazz musicians who are doing great work.

And if that isn't an unpopular music opinion, I don't know what is"

I thought that might start a war of words. Instead, I got agreement. Oh well. In any event, thanks for mentioning a living jazz act. I will check out Ahmed's music.

Do posts on MB have like buttons? 'Cause I like this one. No problem. Some modern jazz is actually quite intriguing. Check out Arooj Aftab as well. Stands as my #2 album of 2024 right behind Fearless Movement.

No like button, so let’s just call it a virtual like. Thanks for that and the recommendations.
