Blues fan here

Was going to post some old prewar blues, a little King Solomon Hill, Oscar Woods, Ramblin' Thomas, that old Texas/Louisiana border stuff but, I need 15 posts before I qualify, so....

Can we talk about some music?

What do you think of Son House?

Son House is the perfect example of those early Mississippi Delta blues, those heavy percussion guitar riffs, those tortured gruff vocals. Charley Patton gets credit for being Da man in pre 1930 Delta blues, I'd go with Son House.

House
Willie Brown/Kid Bailey
Tommy Johnson
Ishman Bracey
Rosa May Moore
Rube Lacy
Freddie Spruell
Charlie McCoy
Bukka White
Bo Carter/Misissippi Sheiks
Geechie Wlley
Charley Patton

the origins of those Mississippi Delta Blues

Avante 11-10-2021 11:08 AM

That old stuff is done by regions...

All Mississippi blues gets stuck under....Mississippi Delta Blues
Memphis/Tennessee
Texas
Louisiana
Alabama
St. Louis
Georgia
Piedmont/East Coast

Each region having a dozen or so artists who best represent the music.

Then you have the instrument, who plays what?

Now add the decade, 20's, 30's, 40is

So it;s....Robert Johnson 30's/guitar/Mississippi Delta
Peetie Wheatsraw....30's/piano/St.Louis
Bessie Smith....20's/vocals/Tennessee

Probably around 500ish or so old blues cats that deserve mention.

Welcome to MB, avante ! :wavey:

Looks like you are an expert on early blues, so pretty soon you'll meet Psi-Fi here on the blues threads, I'm sure.
For myself, I'm more inclined to listen to people who stood on the shoulders of those originals; Dylan, Ry Cooder and electric blues. I used to debate with a poster who has since left us: who is better, SRV or Roy Buchanan? I wonder if you have a position on that admittedly ridiculous question.

Thank you sir, I appreciate that.

Yeah, found that music in the late 60's and it floored me, so raw, so primitive so I educated myself on who was who, a wonderful journey. Pretty much have it all now.

I hate to be a wimp, not my style at all, but it isn't easy picking between those two, both incredible so to pick who was more incredible, can't do it, sorry my friend.

Haha! Yeah, sometimes "no answer" is the best answer!

I´m sure I'll meet you on the music boards soon enough, but for now I have to rush out.

Hope you enjoy swapping opinions and recs here.

In this particular case, there is a clear and obvious best ;):
Roy Buchanan for his long down-to-the-basics instrumentals like Pete's Blues, and pretty much all of "Second Album".

Cool, love to share the music, I have picked up a few things new to me off these forums.

Any region you are curious about just let me know. It really is done that way with this old stuff. Actually sold....Georgia Blues...Memphis Blues...etc.

Now don't think ya swayed me ha~~ but....after giving it more thought, ok Roy Buchanon but it is close and SRV has a few things like Texas Flood that nobody is doing it better.

Texas Flood a cover of a Larry Davis tune.
