Cool The Sporting Thread

Who here plays a sport or used to play a sport?

Any kind, even if it's non competitive and purely recreational.

I used to play Cricket, which didn't last long as I died from sheer boredom.
And I play Golf everynow and again because hitting a ball 250m once in a while is a fabulous feeling. Until you lose the ball on the next shot...

I should play Basketball but I don't want to be 30 and fully aware of how munted my knees and ankles are. But I'm the perfect build for Basketball so meh, shoulda started younger.

I love recreational watersports like surfing and bodyboarding. More or less the latter as I can't afford a proper surfboard but the beach is like a second home. It's a wonderful place.

So do explain the competitive human in yourself.

I used to play hockey... Unfortunately my ankles went gimp or something and I couldn't play anymore. The end.

Guttered. I love Touch but can't play Rugby. I'm like a stick. A long, tall, skinny stick and one good tackle and I'd probably end up digesting my ribcage.

Did you play for long?

played volleyball for years, and it was rediculously competitive. from september till about january, you had the shcool leagues, which was basically just a warm up. Then, the local volleyball clubs would have "tryouts" in which all the players from previous years would attend, along with a tonf o new people, and the teams would remain completely unchanged from the year before. I played on one such team. We had practice 3 or 4 days a week, and tournaments lasting all weekend, every weekend. Then once that was over, there would be 2 months of solid summer camps, with grueling conditioning aspects to it. If you didnt spend your entire summer in camps, you'd lose your spot on the team. My last year we went to nationals, and I just got so sick of the constant pressure that I quit and never looked back. After that, i found i had a whole lot of free time. I started going skiing again with my dad, and I absolutely fell in love with it. everything about it was so different from playing volleyball, I didnt have to worry about my team, my coach, losing my spot on the team, anything. I could just enjoy myself, find my own limits to push, it was exactly what I needed. and now my life very litterally revolves around skiing

Had I not been on the receiving end of a pretty horrific tackle at the age of 15 I could have made a fairly unremarkable career for myself as a professional footballer. But I got nailed, couldn't play properly for two years and now can only manage to enjoy a Sunday kickabout.

I played hockey and basketball most of my life. I represented my region in both sports at state championships. My parents both played these sports too so I guess that's where the influnce came from. I would not consider myself ultra-competative, I mostly played because I loved these sports. Winning was of course enjoyable but it wasn't everything to me. The social side of playing a team sport is definitely a great thing.

I also enjoy watching sport - rugby league, rugby union, basketball, tennis and yes, even boring cricket. It is most enjoyable being at a live match but thanks to Fox, we get it beamed daily into our living rooms.

Bring on the Olympics!!

The NRL is fantastic, far more exciting then a game of Union these days. The All Blacks are no fun to watch, amazing team, but boring, and Australia is in a major slump so theres no competition.

Jibber what position did you used to play? Or did they do the rotational thing everytime you won a point? Is that how it works?

you did the rotational thing, but then as soon as the ball was served, you ran to your regular position. I played middle.
