ugh, 10 pages!?

I really hope you all could help me out a little bit. I normally would post something like this, but I'm really tired and I want to get this DONE!

Anyway, for my college prep class I gotta write a 7-10 page paper on freedom of speech and hate speech. My thesis is basically "Freedom of speech should not include hate speech" And I need a couple good points. Just anything that would spark a paragraph would help. I'm tired and pissy and mind-blocked right now.

Ideas?

MURDER JUNKIE 04-21-2006 11:34 AM

I'm sorry hon, I believe in complete free speech and refuse to believe that it should be compromised. I am a firm believer in the "I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it " ethic. If you draw the line on one thing the line will only get shorter.

I handle this the same way I handle it if I hear a song I don't like, or read something I don't like. I either turn it off, or put it down. This is part of the problem with our planet today, everyone has become so sensitive. Nobody has it harder than the American Indian and you don't hear them complaining very much, no one, I repeat no one has overcame as many obstacles as them. Simply, they knew when to fight and the knew when to ignore.

Predjudice knows no bias, everybody hates somebody

Sorry, it's a cruel world

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-21-2006 11:35 AM

And who should decide what hate speech is?

swim 04-21-2006 11:39 AM

im against censorship and i dont trust people deciding what can and can be said, at some point someone abuses their power and the whole objective of being fair is being missed

IamAlejo 04-21-2006 11:40 AM

1. I disagree with your thesis. Hate speech is really an undefined word.
2. I have a hard enough time with my own work.

This is basically it in a nutshell, hate speach may say to one person "hey this makes sense", but it will probably point out to ten people how ignorant you truly are

DearJenny 04-21-2006 11:54 AM

Thats also part of my paper. Like, I give the oxford definition for hate speech but then I go on to say "but really, who can say what hate speech is." I'm thinking about changing my thesis because I really cannot find enough facts to support it. My whole paper right now is like one page and it consists of court cases in favor of free speech. I hate this so much!

MURDER JUNKIE 04-21-2006 11:56 AM

lean to the other side, it makes for an easier argument.

DearJenny 04-21-2006 11:59 AM

It really would...

I dont even support my thesis....I just figured my teach would never approve of something promoting hate speech....but **** it. I think I'm just gonna give the other side a go and see how far I get.

MURDER JUNKIE 04-21-2006 12:04 PM

however the school board has become so sensitive, that your paper would be classified as hate speech. You can't win, just tell them what they want to hear so that they can say that their school is multicultural and diverse. Then they can go back to ignoring the kid getting assaulted on his lunch hour.

I feel warm and fuzzy already

heh. Yeah, I think I've found a good middle though. My paper will show the importance of respecting free speech while also respecting the choices/history/whatever of the people. Everyone wins.

swim 04-21-2006 12:10 PM

you dont have to promote hate speech just say that you cant tell anyone to think or say because it wouldnt work. we're supposedly a republic and not a totalitarianship.

MURDER JUNKIE 04-21-2006 12:11 PM

sit on the fence, good idea.

Just make sure that over the course of the paper, you decide what YOU believe

My social studies teacher says, "you're allowed to say anything you want, that's your right, but just as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone elses' rights. [Eg: freedom to ___]"

This gives us freedom of oppression, what exactly is that?? Is oppression verbal, physical, mental?? Who decides and how is it determined that someone is being oppressed?

Sorry but your paper begs more questions than answers

sorry just ranting i dont know if it makes sense.. i'll just pretend it does..
