Dressing yourself to ROCK and PARTY

So this morning the guitarist from my band phones me up and says that we're all going to some clothing shops in the town centre, to work on the clothing side of our band 'image'. I'm all for the band image idea, as its part of the spectacle for the audience during a gig, helps to set the right atmosphere etc.

HOWEVER, I'm one of the least fashion-knowledgeable people in the world - so I'm currently asking everybody in a desperate attempt to dress correctly... how ON EARTH should I dress myself to front a dance-oriented indie-rock band? (that pretty neatly sums up our style) The question's a serious one!

This question's particularly aimed at the female and gay members of musicbanter - I'm not entrusting important fashion issues to other straight guys...

well, although I think it's rather stupid for you to dress any way differently than you usually would, i think the coolest style at the mo is the retro. and it fits your style of music perfectly. jeans ( preferably levis ) dark blue mind you, light blue is for rednecks, t-shirts one size too small, brown, blue, yellow, prefferably with some cool logos on them...
edit: also, brown or some equal darker colour pants ( tight mind you ) with them brown cardigans, or other vintage looking cardigans ( billy can tell you what looks cool )

and those t-shirts with collars(sp?) are uber cool, you can even do pink or violet colours, it's vintage so it doesn't look girly...and if you could find them in stripes that would be awesome....

sneakers, can't go wrong with them skanky lookin converse all stars ...or adidas gazelles (:))

:(....i'm too gay....

How about chaps?? http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p/badteeth.gif

Seriously though, I know what you are going through. We videotaped one of our gigs and I had worn shorts, I looked like a F*cking idiot up there. Your dress is pretty important, that is the day I learned.

We'll have none of that thankyou! Some bands get a long way on image alone - not many of those bands get there by dressing like your average joe. A lot of pop bands are successfull almost entirely through image (along with promotion etc., but this is all made possible by the image). And while we do like to 'let the music do the talking', its even better if you can have something else to back up the music. Even if that just means looking a bit cooler than you usually do.

Awesome. Brown, dark-blue, yellow, small. I'm storing up these suggestions, don't you worry.

The best advice I can give is try to look like your audience

Yeah, we might go for trying to look like the coolest people in the audience. We played a gig a couple of weeks ago with a band who looked absolutely brilliant. The drummer had a pimp hat, gloves and everything, the guitarist had big blonde hair and the bassist looked like a scene-kid as if drawn in an anime. As a band they looked extremely good, unfortunately they were rubbish at the music, but you could see the atmosphere was really there in the build up and it would have been wicked had they been up to the job musically.

try to look somewhat dirty as well. I went to see the Atari's before they sucked, I was upfront and they smelled like Zest. There is nothing Rock and Roll about Zest, Rock and Roll is DIRTY!!!

I'll make sure I don't put deodorant on my list of accessories to buy.
