websites you like?

i'm redesigning my record label's website (current design can be seen at http://www.sounddevastation.co.uk and just wondering what the averange music fan likes to see in a website design? (complex, simple, contrasting, frames, flash, whatever)

link some of your favouirtes, in terms of design (can be any kind of content)... it would help me immensely.

Thankyouu!

Let's start with good music...

But, if someone has a crappy band,
I guess it's almost worth it to gamble with a record label.
Maybe I just dont like the idea of someone making my decisions.

I've found people like to just watch the video and mp3s on the website itself, they only download when they see the url for the mp3.
But they like having the option regardless...
Flash is too impractical. It restricts the 'user environment' so much that you cant get enough info onto the page.
Linking to bands on myspace is a cop-out....
If you are taking a band "under your wing" you give them a website.

I like flash sites, but they don't have to be too complicated (like Muse's). I like sites like the ones from the Kooks and the Subways. These are all bandsites. xD I usually don't visit any other sites.

Alo 06-23-2006 06:45 AM

O yeah, and I agree with Ascendents, the links to myspace aren't smart. It makes it look like you're a really cheap label. Also, try to keep your site simple, you add to much text, and that looks quite unproffesional to me. Though, I do like your banners!

Sound Devastation 06-23-2006 07:17 AM

we only link to myspace as thats what the band (aotea) use as their homepage. we offered them their own space but they want us to link to their myspace.

Band sites are usually far more interesting that label sites, so their cool to recommend. The subways site is really nice actually, cheers for that!

well i kinda like the concept better than the earlier one, but you gotta have some curves if you know what i mean...maybe it's better to let a proffesional do it...it doesn't cost all that much and great design goes a long way....( the choice of colours is also very importaint )

i really like domino records design and choice of colours...http://www.dominorecordco.com/site/

( notcie the unusual choice of fonts that gives it a very special look )

I personally like the design. I can't really help you with loading time because I have cable. The only thing I'd really change is make the band names bigger because you have to click them in the right spot to get it to work.

It looks a bit bloggish and is a bit blocky but on the plus side everything is easy to find.
I can`t stand sites they look pretty but it`s impossible to find anything.

Stick a few different colours & fonts in there & it`ll look good.
The grey background has got to go though.

Sound Devastation 06-24-2006 10:47 AM

i know about the band names.. will definately be sorting that.

Paying for a website may be easy but a waste of money when i can make something just as functional myself tbh. Id rather work hard on improving my own skills to make it look awesome than sit back and let someone else do it :P

hmm.. i do what to get away from grey but its hard to find other colours that look smart enough. what would you suggest?

Sound Devastation 06-24-2006 10:52 AM

just stuck up a quick banner - its poor quality i know, will be edited/redone, and made the background black (mainly to accomodate the banner). thoughts?

hmmm.. needs some colour really, any ideas?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-24-2006 11:05 AM

Have pale colours it`s much easier to read things on it rather than on bright colours.

You could have like a sort of index file theme. For example each section on the main page has it`s own color theme. For example orange background for news , purple for bands , green for releases etc etc.And then when you click on those and you go to that section of the website you could base the pages in it in those colours , with a darker colour in the borders.

Sound Devastation 06-24-2006 11:11 AM

good idea but i want to stay away from using too many colours (one, or maybe two at most).. and im getting quite fond of it being all on one page :P

i like the background being black...but the boxes can't stay white right? cos it seems unfinished....other than that it's good...i still suggest using unconventional fonts to make it look a bit more special....

Sound Devastation 06-24-2006 12:50 PM

hmm... changing the white is going to be complicated!
