The Big3's Second Annual Bitch-a-thon

You've been warned.

I'd like to think that since I've been at Music Banter, I've made a concerted effort to not only keep it music based, but to make it a place that would give lesser known bands a fighting chance, or at the very least a place for all of us to get the inside scoop on bands before out friends so we can remain far more hip than they are.

So im goign to pose an argument here, its purpose is to start debate, if you don't like fighting or discussion, please just leave the thread.

Heres my position: Its my opinion that people who leave dead-end commentary in threads like "yeah I like [obvious popular song] too" kill the thread and more importantly, discussion. I think it sucks. I've seen some well detailed and impassioned posts that were followed by 3 or 4 of the aforementioned posts and then no one feeds off the intelligent post. They see the no-hearted commentary that boosted a post count and they give up.

I know we can't get rid of them, but the other discussion killer I see around here are the links to songs. Now im not asserting that the links are bad, but a link these days is an excuse to not write a damn thing about a song. They're killing dicussion. I'd like to ask for everyone to write something about the link or song you just posted as a means of getting the fire started.

Im all for allowing people easy access to music. I don't think everyone should become amazing writers to convey their passions on the songs they like, but I don't want to see it become MusicLink either.

Thanks,
Big3

I do agree somewhat.

I`ve lost count of the number of times when i`ve said EXPLAIN WHY YOU THINK THIS only to get some half assed list.

And yet go to the lounge and you get endless posts picking apart every single sentence in some bullsh*t arguement about paint or something going on for about 5 or 6 pages.

I don`t get it sometimes.

hiu 11-06-2006 08:24 PM

I don't know why I put effort into making a thread like this and it gets 1 post while people make threads that say "lol kool band, discuss" and it gets 5 pages of posts.

You people are idiots. Die.

tdoc210 11-06-2006 08:32 PM

yeah, and what bothers me also, is i haven't seen any new threads except in the lounge, or emo, which i couldn't give two ****s about. The lounge gets *** new threads about makeup, and how horny you are. Yeah, and I make thread about doom metal, and such, and they get 6 responses at msot.

Scarlett O'Hara 11-06-2006 08:35 PM

So what's the topic to debate? I'm keen.

tdoc210 11-06-2006 08:36 PM

the lack of good music orintated threads and posts. and *** ass lounge posts about makeup getting more posts, than say HIU's

Kind of typical this thread went down in the state immediately.

I think you are right about the quality of threads not being very high. But as a n00b myself, I think I know why this is. There are lot's of younger people coming on to the board, I have seen this even in my short MB-existence. Theit purpose for coming here is usually to find new bands, and learn. It takes a while to be able to give good remarks.

I don't know if others do the same, but I learn from MB, and it's posters. And sometimes I refrain from posting, because I have nothing sensible to add (yet), it takes a while for someone to be fully music-orientated. So you can't expect great posts immediately.

I tried here:

http://www.musicbanter.com/showthrea...ghlight=giving

It just got to be that it wasn't worth my time ripping and uploading, if there is a resurgance of enthusiasm I may start again however it isn't likely

If it makes you feel any better, Megauplaod just won't let me download anymore. I was actually very happy with that thread. If you could use sendspace, you'll have at least one person with a little enthusiasm. =)

[MERIT] 11-07-2006 09:47 AM

i mostly agree with you Big3, but many times what people want to say about a band has already been said 10 times so they just say "cool" or "i agree" as to not add unnecessary redundance to the thread.

Alo 11-07-2006 09:57 AM

Meehh, especially a lot of topicstarters do that. To keep their thread high. Though, to be honest, so do I.

[MERIT] 11-07-2006 10:02 AM

some people like a band but dont know all that much about them, so they just add "cool" or "i like them" to show their support for the band, while disguising their ignorance.

Alo 11-07-2006 10:05 AM

^ So they think, it usually makes them look even more ignorant. Maybe threads should be made more detailed from now on? A good startpost, with some background stuff, and a link to one or more mp3 usually set's of a better discussion.

On another forum I'm on, they have strict standards, and it works! But then again, it's just a discussion forum, and not a music forum.

[MERIT] 11-07-2006 10:06 AM

thats an idea, but putting strict post standards would result in exponentially fewer posts, and exponentailly more posts for mods to delete.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-07-2006 10:07 AM

I can start a thread right now to see if you`ll put your money where your mouths are ;)

No, I'm talking about strict threadstart standards.
Post-deletion usually ends up with the mods and posters having discussions in the thread about the deletion. Up to the point where the original topic of the thread get's ignored.

@Urban: Nobody's acting goody-two-shoes here. It's just some good ol' speculation.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-07-2006 10:14 AM

Nothing goody two shoes about it.

Like I said I can start a thread right now where people of whatever taste in music they have can express themselves & go into detail about what they like.

But the question is do people want to?

dont be a party pooper. starting a thread just to try to prove someone wrong is just as gay as spamming.

Alo 11-07-2006 10:20 AM

It's the way you start the thread. If you have a good basis, with what exactly you want them to go deeper into, and give an example yourself. I think people would be eager.

But if you say: ''discuss music here'' People get lost on what exactly to post. Because you're trying to put the whole of MB in one thread.

I`m not doing it to prove people wrong.I`ve had the idea for a while. In fact i`ve done it myself here ...

http://www.musicbanter.com/showthread.php?t=9727

I`d think it would be good if I could get another 100 all posted by different people here to sum up this year in music and have 100 albums from this year that people have been listening to.

Assuming there are approx 20 regular posters here , could you think of 5 albums from this year you could write 200/300 words about?

yes, if given time.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-07-2006 10:30 AM

you`ve got 8 weeks ;)

Alo 11-07-2006 10:47 AM

Ultimate albums, or albums released this year?

MoonlitSunshine 11-07-2006 10:51 AM

^ good point. I don't know if I could write about 5 albums from this year, but I could probably write about at least ten of my all time favourites, and I'm not very good at writing reviews

Alo 11-07-2006 11:24 AM

^ You'll get feedback from others, that's how you learn. :)

Who is...but if you write how you feel about them and mean it, you won't go far wrong.
That is what's been missing from a lot of post replies to threads.
Heartfelt opinion...a bit of passion about the music you love and why.

That can't be that hard...

I've been trying to do all the albums that have come out this year that I've given a listen but I'm too lazy so all I have is list of what albums have come out this year. But, yea, orginize this and I'll contribute.

_Spinning_ 11-07-2006 03:25 PM

I think you're onto something, Urban.

I'd be interested in writing a few things up, even if they did suck. :)

MoonlitSunshine 11-07-2006 03:30 PM

Hey, I just got Joanna Newsom's new album, I'll see what I can do about that. So far, I can tell you it's bloody amazing, but you'll be wanting more than that...
