I really have no idea. All I can think of is the character from The Mighty Boosh too.

I grew up watching non-american comedies on PBS like Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf, Red Green, and Coupling (the american version was a colossal flop). But I think some of the stuff on adult swim now is pretty genius. So I go either side of the pond/border on comedy.

I love British humor, mainly, The Mighty Boosh, and, The Monty Python show. It's outrageous.

The Mighty Boosh is a British show...

CaseNumber:825 02-16-2009 03:30 PM

I still don't really like The Mighty Boosh
The only thing they're really really well known for is their 'crimping' thing that they coined

Apart from that it just seems a bit... well... stupid to be honest

I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the newer British comedy shows anyway (apart from the panel/quiz shows, those are hilarious)

I much prefer the older (pre-2000) shows

Mojo 02-17-2009 07:44 AM

I dont like The Mighty Boosh either. 'Stupid' isnt always a bad thing, stupid can be done and done well in a way that is still comprehensible and makes sense. The Mighty Boosh always just seemed stupid for no good reason to me, and I'm not down with that.

Not officially comedy, but still........

The funniest thing about brit's is their accent. It's hilarious.

You're not the first to say that, but I'm always bemused that people in America think we all talk like Hugh Grant or John Oliver, it differs very much from city to city, I mean have you heard hardcore Scouse or Pie Head?

Go to a Millwall game & say that. I'll go along so I can laugh with you.

Piss Me Off 02-23-2009 02:58 PM

"Millwall! That's the one! Do you know this chant? 'Millwall, Millwall, you're all really dreadful, and your girlfriends are unfulfilled and alienated... '"

I found the clip.

Cracks me up every time.

it's the bloke that looks like a thumb

I believe it firmly settles this argument.

Just googled that. Wow. And to think I came to the thumb conclusion all by myself.

that was quite an accurate guess.

though i would have also accepted 'he looks like a thigh with a face'

Just to prove that not all British folk speak like Hugh Grant, here's one of the best comedy series ever to come out of Britain.

This is Phoenix Nights, based in t'North. :thumb:

WolfAtTheDoor 02-23-2009 04:49 PM

Phoenix Nights is a bag of bollocks.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-23-2009 04:54 PM

I don't mind Phoenix Nights.

I do however think that Peter Kay is one of the most boring stand up comedians going.

And the less said about Paddy McGuinness and Dave Spikey the better.

I don't mind Neil Fitzmaurice though.

Feign 02-23-2009 04:57 PM

I'm not reading through 23 pages of comments...so here's my opinion: They're both equal, it just depends where you look. 30 Rock, It's always sunny in Philadelphia, Extras, The Office.. They're all on par with one another. Of course there's also ones that don't work as well...which in america is the norm. Few shows show signs of quality, and the ones that do usually die off pretty fast. It could be the same in Britain, but I don't live there.

WolfAtTheDoor 02-23-2009 05:07 PM

I just don't like/get American Humour. 10% of the output I watch from American during the course of the year I actually find funny, the rest of it just serves to entertain me, maybe the odd smile.

Therefore, I'm going to ignore it exists and simply list good British comedies.

Spaced.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-23-2009 05:12 PM

Best ITV comedy in the last 15 years.

I miss this show.

Ah good stuff!

"Don't you dare use the word party as a verb in this shop!"

Seltzer 02-23-2009 06:30 PM

"Well I was going to say, let's potter along to the party."

I agree 100% with this. Max and Paddy's road to nowhere was patchy but Phoenix Nights is gold. I'm still hoping for another series of 'Early Doors'. Such a well written microcosm of working class life.

kyleargyle 02-26-2009 10:48 PM

British vs. American comedy?

Ricky Gervais FTW!

TheCellarTapes 02-27-2009 12:38 AM

Early Doors is marvellous

Mojo 02-27-2009 01:24 AM

Early Doors is spectacular I agree. I really believe that, like The Royle Family, you dont need to be British to appreciate it but I have a feeling it helps. I have a feeling that you cant truly appreciate everything about it if you arent British.

I'd love another seies too but maybe too much time has passed now?
