Does anybody else think this is silly?

Does anybody else ever think this is silly...

... people who say they are a musician, model, artist or photographer on their web profiles, when this isn't actually their job?

If you work five days a week in a shop and have a set of photographs of you taken by some amateur photographer once a month, you're a shopworker, not a model. If you sell houses for a living, and for a hobby you play in a band who have five songs and who play a gig once every two weeks, you are an estate agent, not a musician!

I'm a engineering research student, not a songwriter :p

Ok, pigeonholing people might be bad, but pigeonholing yourself in the wrong pigeonhole is even worse!

Who agrees, who disagrees???

Mama Booze 12-12-2006 05:24 AM

Yes I agree with that but you could put like, "...who songwrites on the side." or whatever, that would be accurate.

DontRunMeOver 12-12-2006 05:27 AM

Well, I spend more time cooking than writing songs, more time walking than cooking and more time sleeping than walking.

So in that order, it would be more accurate to say I'm a:

1. Research student.
2. Sleeper.
3. Walker.
4. Chef.
5. Coffee drinker.
6. Eater.
6. Songwriter.

What I mean is, I think your suggestion is much more appropriate than what people usually put. That's the kind of thing people should put, to not come off (to me anyway) as deluded wallies.

More sad than silly really...although, I would say that you're a musician, you write and play music, it may be a hobby or whatever, but you can do it, I for example can't. It's a bit different with other professions I think, one can't really call themselves a photographer if they take random shots that never get sold.

Alo 12-12-2006 07:12 AM

Stuff like that belongs under interests or hobbies.

But most people probably don't take the people who put that on their website serious anyway.

bruise_violet 12-12-2006 07:47 AM

Just check my profile, I actually AM an actress.

DontRunMeOver 12-12-2006 07:58 AM

Well, if you're a student and you spend a lot of your time doing acting and you do well in it then your description seems right, student 'actress' as you put it.

Are you very good at acting then?

Meh, I personally don't mind, mine used to say Pinecone Removal Specialist and Rape Artist Extraordinaire.... but those are both true.

That is a hell of a thing to have on your CV. The other boys must be jealous.

They are. For a while they felt that I didn't deserve the title, until I did a little demonstration and proved that I did.
