You like Disturbed.

I really see no redeeming factor in that band at all.

swim 12-18-2006 07:39 PM

ATTN Billy Corgan is stupid

"The Pavement thing was really silly and immature. But honestly, I don't really think we're that singled out. I think basically any problems that have ever existed exist in that Sonic Youth, Pavement, Jesus Lizard, you know, that segment of indier-than-though, I think they take umbrage with a band that can basically do what they do but better and have more success than they have. Because apparently, in their mindset--and this is the problem with their mind set--they think that being cool and having these cool friends equals the kids are going to respond to what you're doing. And that's that very kind of thinking that separates them from the audience. They can sleep at night thinking they're the coolest people on the planet but the fact of the matter is, kids don't get up in the morning and listen to those bands. Kids don't fall in love listening to those bands. And that's the difference. And I think that's what causes the friction."

Yes, so my musical taste is sub-par according to most here but that DOES NOT make my own musical knowledge or ability shit.

ATTN: ppl

you all have bad taste in music
shut up

DearJenny 12-18-2006 08:30 PM

^I'm not even mad about being insulted for my "bad" taste in music anymore. But I'm pissed because their assuming because the bands I like suck, I suck as a musician. I'm damn good as a musician. Vocal, cello and keyboard, in that fucking order according to experience. Classically trained in vocal bitches.

Spike*Spiegel 12-18-2006 09:49 PM

being in a choir or orchestra does not validate your talent or taste in music. any half-assed douchebag can join a public school choir. we had special ed kids in the choir at my high school so i KNOW you had no trouble getting into one.

I took music theory for a year in high school and AP music theory for a semester in college so I can compose melodies using structures and have a pretty damn good ear for music.

At my high school there were three choirs. First is open to anyone, second is audition only and third is invitation only, a 15 person choir, in top five groups in the state. If you read above, I was in the top choir for three years out of four(in which one year I was not in any choir at all) and have been somewhat classically trained for state competitions as a soloist. Same with orchestra, three groups. I was only in the second group playing cello because I honestly dont like it too much. And then there is music theory. I know my shit. Im not saying I was in just any high school choir and I'm the shit. I'm just not a musical retard, and I dont appreciate being threated as such. Unfortunately I cannot persue more in college because I only have the finances for gen. ed. and major classes for journalism. Sucks for me.

Not to be argumentative, but its not really an ego trip if its fact.

DearJenny 12-18-2006 10:25 PM

SO HIU GETS TO BOAST ABOUT BEING A FUCKING ELITIST AND I DONT GET TO DEFEND MYSELF? WTF IS THAT!?

This place is full of so much fucking bullshit.

sleepy jack 12-18-2006 10:26 PM

Christ I can't believe so many of you take hiu so seriously.

I consider it an ego trip if they're going on about themselves like they're some sort of music god and referring to themselves as "the shit".

Aside from that, all the schooling in the world doesn't make you any good or your taste any better.

I could point out about a bazillion post by hiu, mikey, urban, and others doing just that. CLLR was just correcting Spike, nothing more.

IMO you cant get technically good without any training. Look at many of the art rock musicians of the 60s and 70s. They all had schooling and even classical training. Yes was amazing because all their guys were proficiently trained at their instruments.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 12-18-2006 10:32 PM

I was in jazz band in middle school. Musically, I might be the next Bach. Duh.

But according to that Harvard test and my world-class musical ablility grade, I should be... :[.

The closest thing i've had to training, is reading the how to read tab thing off MX and I am very good. So your opinion is wrong.
