Apple vs. Dell

I need a new laptop. And I have a fairly weak knowledge of different computers capabilities.

Which should I buy, a Dell or an Apple?

Sparky 02-24-2007 08:20 PM

if you can afford a macbook ****ing buy it!

isight, iphoto, garage band, 2% chance of getting viruses. Its great!

and you'll seem a lot sleeker and modern with a macbook then a clunky ol pc.

Sneer 02-24-2007 08:46 PM

dell laptops are the best around.

Loser 02-24-2007 10:14 PM

I have a gateway it's by far a great laptop better than an apple :D

Barnard17 02-25-2007 06:22 AM

Do you play games?

Loser 02-25-2007 07:19 AM

I use mine sometimes for games other times to mess around.

tdoc210 02-25-2007 08:21 AM

hello.
if you are going to buy dell you better shovel out the 3000$ for the xps laptop, because the rest are ****.
id go with alienware though

Levithan 02-25-2007 09:12 AM

^Yeah, get Alienware if you can...They look freakin awesome. Back to the point, don't get Dell...The battery keeps going wrong on mine

tdoc210 02-25-2007 09:26 AM

^oi dells are ****.

I play a fair amount of games, the last few games that I have played seriously were Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Diablo, Baldur's Gate (basically games my brother gives me when he gets tired of them)

even like an inspirion 1505 that you make as upgraded as possible?

And for compatablility do you know what is usually the type of programs it has compatibility issues with.

tdoc210 02-25-2007 09:36 AM

^ you can use microsoft office but only the apple version, apps thata re ported to mac are usually watered down. The programs made specifically for mac are amazing. But windoes Vista is amazing, so i would steer clear of mac, because they are slowly sinking.

skindredluver 02-25-2007 09:39 AM

bad descion
unless the iphone actually does something in the popular tech market.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-25-2007 09:52 AM

I have an Apple G5 desktop, before they made them super awesome (which was lame), and it has run perfectly for almost two years now. Never a virus, never a problem. I used to play Diablo 2 and Starcraft, which are full mac compatible. As far as reliabilty and security goes, Mac rules.

Sound Devastation 02-25-2007 10:00 AM

Don't get a laptop.

Desktop PCs are much better spec for your money (the same spec will often cost double in a laptop) and much easier to mend if they go wrong. Dell aren't really the ones to go for either. Go for an Intel processor though. for about £1000 now you can get some amazing desktops. Make sure you put £100 aside for the basic Microsoft office cause they don't come with it any more.

(if you're buying one soon, try getting one with XP. they all come with a free Vista upgrade but are about half the price of pre-installed vista PCs)

and id say definately get a PC over a Mac. Macs are made for music and pictures and stuff which is all very cool and fun until you want to want to do something useful with it - then it gets stuck. I couldn't do even my everyday stuff with a Mac..

If you intend to game on the movie, don't go for a Mac because they require either 1) specifically bought Mac compatible games (which aren't massively available) or 2) the knowledge of how to aquire and install an emulator such as virtual desktop. On a laptop you don't really want to be wasting time, space and memory on sorting out an emulator unless you have good knowledge of it already. If you want to game, go for Alienware. If not, go for Mac - OSX is a stable system whereas Vista is new and you'd be looking at seeing a lot of security updates. Yes, you do get virus' for Mac but they're much harder to come across. Pretty much all the "incredible new features" that Vista users boast have already been on OSX for a number of years.

Most programmes you'd buy from a shop. BUT - a lot of officey programmes (eg Photoshop) will sell Mac counterparts, it's just games where you'd be having problems, as I mentioned you can get a windows emulator. As for things such as Microsoft Office, yes you can get it for Mac but why waste the time/money when you can also come across open source programmes that are free to download and mostly come in whichever system you're using. Or download it illegally.

I have 3 Dell desktops at my house. So I don't really want another desktop.

Thanks, that's really helpful information.

That's just wrong. First off, Vista is horrible. Just horrible.
Second, Macs are sinking? That's why Vista is just a cheap attempt at making it seem Mac-like. Not to mention the new OS coming out for Macs in like....a month? It's going to blow away Vista, and it's coming equipped with Parallels so you can run with Windows if you want to play your games or whatever.

And lastly, you prefer Dells? The customer service between Dell and Apple isn't even comparable.

tdoc210 02-25-2007 04:44 PM

^ theres a new os for apple coming!1!11!
i like vista, its allright.
Bill Gates is obviousley jealous of Jobs GUI. apparent in vista, but oh well.
I dont hate apple. the G5's have some amazing power.

When you can have more than one window of a program running on macs then I'll get one.

Sparky 02-25-2007 04:51 PM

I don't get it. And I'll just run parallels if I want to do anything I can do on windows that I can't do on my Mac OS.

Sneer 02-25-2007 05:12 PM

my freind bought a mac notebook today, needless to say, i love it.

Kevorkian Logic 02-25-2007 06:22 PM

So the consensus is Mac is better?

IamAlejo 02-25-2007 06:44 PM

Depends on what you are using it for and if money is an issue? If you are just using it to type up documents and look at the internet, stick to what OS you are used to.

If you are doing stuff with the arts or know Macs, go Mac IMO.

Barnard17 02-25-2007 07:09 PM

I'm currently building up my own rig, primarily for gaming so it'll end up with Vista but I wholeheartedly want to get OSX onto it as well. I'm just really concerned that I've heard about needing haxxor skills to crack coding to install OSX onto a non-Apple PC. Apparently they have **** on the OS that blocks you from installing onto something that isn't one of Apples own so that whatever you do you HAVE to buy a Mac (unless you breach the TOS). That's the main thing that scares me about apple; the fact that they greedily cling to any monopolisation they can and purposefully make life hard for home-builders.

But you're buying a pre-made so that's not really a concern.
