Umm.. call me stupid, but I thought we already have landed on mars with little race cars things

I think we may have landed something on Mars or tried, but not something as impressive as these new machines. Here's CNN's Space page. They're constantly updating it with new Mars information.

I think it is crap, did we actually gain anything useful from it? I mean sure it is cool, but what is the point of spending all that money??

the point is to learn stuff about mars, if we found theres lots of water thats just under a 3 inch layer of rock (i know its far fetched but just for instance) then we would know it would be a lot easyer to put people there and what if theres lots of high grade dimonds there? maybe someone could mak money by sending some stuff to mars?

but more then anything, i think people want to feel that the human race is moving forward or at least has the potential to do so. if everyone lived like americans, canadians and other developed nations the world would basicly be 'drained' and largly uninhabitable in short order so the prospect of every family in the world having a home with 2 cars and a computer is not a step forward for the human race, however, having a colony on mars would be
