what exactly is a bar mitzvah?

Rite of passage for Jewish boys/girls(Bat instead of Bar) into adulthood. Usually comes with a big party.

Congratulations, although I don't know how 1 simple party can turn you into a man.
You should do what that kid on Seinfeld did, and make out with one of your friend's hot moms.
Do they always have those on people's birthdays?

The main part is the Religous service, not the party. Although I'm sure Bar Mitzvah parties have turned plenty of boys into men...If you know what I mean...

and is it an age thing,....or do you have to go through some kinda comfrimation classes?

Well you have to be able to read Hebrew without vowels, and memorize a bunch of prayers, so it takes a bunch of study, but technically if your mother's Jewish, once you turn 13 you're a Bar Mitzvah. So yah, it's an age thing.
