If someone gives you a gift card then that means that if gift cards didn't exist they wouldn't have gotten you anything or would have gotten you something obviously thoughtless. Don't give in to middle class Christmas shopping logic. Gift cards are pointless.

Also they make good gifts for long distance friends.

I have a friend I've known since childhood and every birthday we send each other gas cards, grocery store gift cards, etc. Couldnt do that without a gift card.

At that point just ask what she wants or send her money. Would it actually be any less thoughtless? Or would sending each other money just make it clear that you're just pointlessly trading her twenty dollar bill for your twenty dollar bill? Would asking what the other wants express more than is comfortable just how little you know about each other at this point?

The person who delivers our mail, not only under these pandemic circumstances,
but under 100°+ temps gets at least 2 a year from us from places I know she likes.
