Since all the other Canadians are slacking...
Deal to keep Hockey Night theme song falls through
IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE!!! fucking CBC, fucking royalty disputes, fucking money hungry bastards killed hockey night in canada. May as well get rid of the fucking national anthem while they're at it. FUCK Copyright Music & Visuals. The highest liscencing fee in canadian television isn't fucking good enough? FUCK YOU Ciccone. Six figure buyout not an adequate compensation? That song may as well be the fucking national anthem for the amount of kids that grew up on that. how many fucking times have kids in canada sung that song while playing street hockey or in backyard rinks? fuck you and your greedy, soulless corporation. What the fuck will that song be good for when it's no longer played on hockey night in canada? it's worth absolutely jack shit if it's not associated with hockey night in canada. fuck Ciccone, fuck coyright music & visuals and most of all FUCK CBC for screwing this all up. Now CTV has bought the rights to the song, and will have to remaster it. same tune, entirely different arrangement. nice of CTV to capitalize on the fuck-ups of CBC, but it's not the same. hockey night in canada, fucking senile old don cherry with his disgusting suits even, and the hockey theme above all else, THAT'S canadian hockey. not whatever CTV throws out there with this patched up bull shit. /rant |
I blame the red wings.

Wow had no idea. That is horrible news not even a sports fan (but canadian) so I know how much of a joke it's going to be when the program starts and its another tune.

you do know hockey night in canada was in negotiations to change networks a while back right? (2 seasons ago if i remember right). while the CBC is good at is screwing up, the CRTC content laws (while well intended) don't always work to the benefit of the broadcaster.
while it sucks that the tune is leaving the CBC at least it's going to another canadian broadcaster as opposed to ESPN. it's also not like the song hasn't been reworked and re-arranged over the past 40 years too. it's not like TSN doesn't know what they're doing when it comes to sports broadcasting either, couple that with the 6 year extension they signed last week with the NHL that gives them even more canadian team coverage. nothing lasts forever. you can either whine about it or move on. effing swearing your effing head off only makes it seem like you're overcompensating for the fact that you didn't care until it was too late. canadian hockey has nothing to do with broadcasting. it has nothing to do with a loud mouth in a suit and like it or not, it has nothing to do with a big band jazz ditty. it's always been about sportsmanship, hard work, and camaraderie. THAT is what don cherry focused on for every coach's corner broadcast. he'd always try to find someone who embodied that behavior to showcase them on his segment. or conversely he'd find someone who went against those ideals and would publicly call them out, calling them cheap bums and goons. and that's what the public was drawn to, he didn't kiss anyone's butt, he called it like he saw it and always maintained a clear view of what constituted good hockey - being a good sport. |
I can sympathise.
When ITV beat BBC for the rights to the Premier League a few years ago we lost the Match of the Day theme for ****ing U2. Luckily they only had the licence for 2 years before the BBC got it back again. |

it's like focusing on the decoration on top of the frosting on the cake. yes it's significant but when it's all said and done, people want the cake. it may well go down as one of the biggest blunders in CBC sports history, like the time they fired ron maclean for a summer, but it's hardly the end of hockey. |

I personally, hate this move. That song is Hockey night in Canada. All kinds of people have their own hockey night in Canada story. When that song came on the kids shut up and sat infront of the tv.
Its pretty funny, i am friends with Scott Russel's Son ( CBC commentator) i must dig into if he knows anything more, why they dident resign the rights. |

but how else can anything be nostalgic if it's not from the past. does "look up, look up, look WAAAYYYYYYYyyyyy up, and i'll call Rusty" mean anything to you? unless you're in your 30s and up it shouldn't - but does it really make you feel like you missed out on something? like anything else in pop culture nothing lasts forever, you just happen to be around and cognitive to witness a significant change first hand. keeping with your analogy of the joke i don't think it's so much that the joke is becoming more private so much as the club around the comedian delivering the joke has drastically changed to the point where the comedian has to move. basically the NHL is the comedian, and the club was the television broadcasting industry. consider how much that has changed since in the last 2 decades. how many specialty channels are there now? how many sport specific specialty channels? is it even possible to get a basic cable tv package in canada without getting TSN? then consider the kind of budgets privately owned commercial broadcasters can provide to their stations compared to the government sanctioned budget of a public broadcaster. all while continuing to adhere to the CRTC regulations for canadian content in broadcasting. the CBC has had issues with the NHL for years now. i wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that CBC brass has been indirectly trying to offload the NHL for a while now while trying to save face and act like they want to keep it at the same time. they're dumping close to 20% of their annual budget for a single evening of ratings. from a logistical standpoint it just doesn't seem feasible to continue down that path. i really think having the theme move to TSN is the best thing that could have happened in the current situation. i'm sure it helped them secure a better deal with the NHL which in turn helps them become an even better canadian based all sports specialty channel. while freeing the CBC to go back to being canada's provider of homegrown arts and entertainment. it's not like the theme was bought by foxsports or espn. |
