I just have the regular American accent which to me is no accent at all. I don't pronounce any words in a funny way that I'm aware of but I like to hear other accents. To me it's cool to see how different people are.

People (Girls mainly, guys just don't notice for some reason) , always ask if I'm French or something. I don't know why, I've never lived or even bee outside of the country since I left the fetal position. But a store owner in NYC could tell I was from California. I don't get it.

when you get into texas accents, they have difference all there own due to what region they come from,....tyler is considered east texas, and their accents are different from any other region in texas,....i'm an east texan,...... east texans have more of a drawl, and their voices tend do be softer (though i dont think my voice is soft at all,....) the letter 'i' often makes and 'a' sound,....so like,....'night' would be 'naht' central texans have more of a clipped rythem,.... south texans are flat and can tend to be a bit nasal west texans sound alot like south texans, only they all sound like they have dust in their throats,....i guess because they might north texans have the least amount of twang, i always figured it was the yankee influence,.... you know, its also not just the way we say things that give us our accents, i think some of it is also our phraseing, things we say because they were passed down through the generations,.......i say old things all the time, some things i'm sure others would deam 'uneducated', but i dont think its that at all, i think its just the way i feel comfortable,...... |

you know sweets, youre young, and i under stand that being texan means little to you, and you almost seem ashamed of it,..... but i look at it much differently,.....being texan is part of what defines me, its who i am, my family was here before texas was texas, and in some way i think i get strength outa this dirt under my feet,.......you should take pride in being texan, we have a rich history, amazing natural resources, and just,....alot of cool ****,...... |

Your welcome. Tennessee |
Why is there no love for the North Eastern accents? No one saw Good Will Hunting?
Also, for our New Yorker pages back, you add an "ou" after the W in water Loser. And add W's into coffee, dog, and various other words that don't have them. NY accents don't wow me, but I enjoy talking to people from there because its kind of...goombah-esque. |

Does it matter if the rest of the world considers Texas to be the most prominent representation of the American south?
|
When I think of the American south, I think of Georgia.
I get the impression that Texans see themselves as separate from the rest of the states. Like they think they're big enough to be a country in their own right. I've no idea where I got this impression from btw. |
^ Behold...the most obnoxious accent on earth. |

I guess Virginia's part of the South too...

So you consider Virginia part of the south?
|
no but Texas is more south than Alabama, I live in Texas and ive always considered it the south, and most others Texas considered it too.

In reply to the original post, for the most part I quite like accents from the southern states of the US and don't like the ones from the north. The New York accent is probably my least favourite.

Virginia is the south for all historical purposes. Today is much less southern do to its proxemity with D.C. and the influx of northern influence. Further, its about to go blue in 2008 making it loose more of its credibility. To that end, Pennsylvania is more culturally Southern on its western front that Virginia is outside of its sloping point in Tennesee. And texas isn't southern in the sense of culture, more geography. If you're concluding they are southern it seems to imply you either don't know Texas culture, or you don't know southern culture. |

I had a friend move to Boston from Boise thinking he'd be protected from stupid people in a safe liberal bubble. Stupid people breed more, they outnumber us and they are in every accent imaginable. I'm more curious to ask why you'd agree with the stereotypical assessment of southern accents. What illicit behavior is associated with other accents? |
