The cancer of the internet

My bf introduced me to this site a couple of weeks ago and I have pretty much decided it's the worst thing ever to happen to the internet. On my little time on that site I have seen a cat getting burned to death, child porn, a beheaded guy tied to a swing set, and a ridiculous number of vaginas. It's sick.

Anyhow I was wondering if other people view 4chan as the same cancerous monster that I do? Or do they actually enjoy it? And if you do, what exactly do you like about it? Or more what threads do you tend to like?

insinkerator 09-28-2008 10:49 AM

4 chan especially that forum really shouldnt be advertised.....

its a horrible horrible site

The Unfan 09-28-2008 12:03 PM

I'm a non-user because I'm not really a fan of the content. However, I view it as the most beautiful thing the internet has ever brought forth. There is just something about the open chaoticness of it that I find to be really awe inspiring. If ever there were a website that was a demonstration that showed how great humanity is its 4-Chan.

swim 09-28-2008 12:08 PM

I have the highscore.

riseagainstrocks 09-28-2008 01:17 PM

4chan is a great concept and I appreciate most of their work, but I would never associate myself with its members or their stupid "memes"

Rage Against the Machine 09-28-2008 01:19 PM

/mu/ is okay.

tdoc210 09-28-2008 01:54 PM

so why did you click on any of the links? or go back to the site a subsequent time? is the site really the sickness or is it the desensitized curiosity of our modern society?

i'm with the unfan on this one. nothing wrong with the site. potentially lots wrong with its users.

i don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows
i don't need to watch 2 girls 1 cup to know poo porn is gross
and i don't need to check out 4chan to know just how depraved we can be,

4chan? never heard of it

I went through a phase in my teens of seeking out the most horrific pictures/videos that the internet could offer. I thought it would help to prepare me for the "real world" but instead it's just made me incredibly paranoid and overly aware of my own mortality.

The worst, for me, are beheadings..
One in paticular still haunts me. First they cut their windpipe then they left them for a little while to make desperate and frantic high-pitched breathing noises like a pig. You could hear other people, off camera, chattering happily while this was happening. The "beheader" then returned to finish up.

I also saw one where a guy's hands and feet were cut off with a machete.

Not good

man be careful what you let into your head

for the fact that they are proof of our inalienable right to free speech
im glad 4chan exists

for what you report that they show
i would never visit the site
if for no other reason than to protect myself from the horror of the insanity it depicts

15Steps 09-28-2008 08:47 PM

lol 4chan.

sweet_nothing 09-28-2008 08:48 PM

ive been there once it was enough for me

lucifer_sam 09-28-2008 10:07 PM

This thread motivated me to check out the site. I found none of the above things. I stand disappointed.

Fyrenza 09-29-2008 02:57 AM

I never go on my own, the only time I see the site is when sitting on my bf's lap when he's at the computer, which is quite often actually.

And yes it is sickness of our society

oh, and to the mods, I wasn't trying to advertise the site by pasting a link, I was just trying to make it easier to see the site if you've never seen it.

TheBig3 09-29-2008 07:57 AM

I don't care if it makes me ignorant.

People who watch that sort of thing are bored, uninteresting, attention whores who want to one up their idiot friends the next day at work/school.

Theres a list of about a million other things you could be doing that have some degree of worth. At least this gives these fruitbaskets something do do so their not out amoung the masses.

Kevorkian Logic 09-29-2008 08:10 AM

yes and no.

I do agree that people look at these sites sometimes so that they have something to talk to their friends about, however I do not agree that it makes them uninteresting or attention whores. It's just their form of how they know how to have social contact, not everyone gets a hard on from being outside or what nor.

lol. *goes to check it out*. ... NO

it's just morbid curiosity that everyone has to some extent. i mean i'd rather see a guy with a raccoon surgically attached to his wang on the net than be traumatised when such an everyday occurrence confronts me in the real world. well not really.

I deleted the link because it was flagged KL.
I realise you're not promoting it, or endorsing the site, but if someone complains and what with the child porn, burning animals and such...a direct link had to go.
It's obvious you only put it up for discussion.
Nothing personal KL. :)

This thread is causing some debate about the subject of sites like this, which is always a good thing.

Brad Stengel 09-29-2008 11:41 AM

You have to go to /b/ on 4chan to see the terribleness/hilarity.

A GIANT percentage of everything funny thats internet related came from 4chan.

Its a disgusting tribute to free speech, the dark side of man, and what people are capable of when they know they won't get caught. The board is 90% not funny, but the stuff that is funny on there, is absolutely hilarious. But you have to have a really sick sense of humor for alot of it.

Molecules 09-29-2008 11:56 AM

Plus cancer destroys millions of lives every year. This is just college dorm ****

jackhammer 09-29-2008 12:22 PM

As long as the internet is here, sites like this will always be around. I did'nt bother clicking on it and I have never heard of it. That sort of thing just makes me desensitised but kiddie porn is just screwed up, so there is no way on earth I would go there. That is beyond shock value.

I did visit rotten a few times in my early internet days but you become immune after a while.

lucifer_sam 09-29-2008 01:07 PM

So beheadings and animal tortures aside, the WORST thing you could think of is a toddler who forgot to put on a pair of pantaloons before his gramma snapped a picture of him? Bit convoluted sense of moarlity, don't you think?

I always wondered where the line between cheeky fun and child pornography stood. I'm pretty sure my family have entire albums devoted to pictures of me overenthusiastically swinging my naked self around. Don't misinterpret me, though--people who abuse children should be hung by their entrails. I just don't understand what constitutes the difference between kiddie porn and a toddler who refuses to wear clothes.

Neither do I but i'm not about to click on the site and find out. When you have kids yourself the words 'kiddie porn' don't exactly endear you to visit a site even if it may only be a kid in a nappy.

All my cousins are toddlers, and I can imagine the horror and disgust at that. I'm not saying it would motivate me to see it either, but I would much rather have to endure that than watch a beheading.

The only thing remotely funny about 4chan is how absolutely unfunny everything on it is. Its one big self parody of its own self parody and it doesn't even realize it.

beheadings are really hard to watch, I've only seen one and I threw up afterwards.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-29-2008 01:42 PM

I think it's great that there's a place on the internet where all the morons can meet up & stay out of my way.

jackhammer 09-29-2008 01:43 PM

No that's Pitchfork :D

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-29-2008 01:47 PM

5 sites you'll never see in my bookmarks

4chan
facebook
myspace
pitchfork
nme

:D

lucifer_sam 09-29-2008 01:52 PM

You wouldn't catch the appeal of Facebook if you're not a college bum. It's not really a forum to meet strangers but to connect to the people you already know. I would never be friends on Facebook with someone I didn't know in real life.

So, I mean, if you don't have that many friends to begin with... :D

Molecules 09-29-2008 02:16 PM

Actually I deleted my facebook account a couple of weeks ago, and before any harsh rebuttals, there are only about 5 people I keep in regular contact with anyway, whatever - out of the hundreds of tenuous 'friends' on there it just seemed pointless.

Moreover I've never been comfortable with the smallprint when signing up to the site (facebook reserves the right to keep and distribute all photos you've been tagged in; dish out your personal stats and info for market research, etc)...

at the end of the day you can live without it... just like people, amazingly, once managed without iPhones and Blackberrys...

apologies for the off topic... checking out 4chan now and y'know... meh.
