Bought a Joyce Chen flat bottom for 29.95 the other day online. It ain't a Breville but it works pretty damn good. Heats up nice and will get anything as crispy as you want it.

Surprisingly enough I found a decent one last purchase at Walmart. Yeah I know.

I'm starting a food and literature blog. :]
I will be reviewing some restaurants but also talking about some of my own recipes.
I'll definitely post some of my stuff here when I get started.

I'm currently at the end of a recovery from a tonsillectomy so there are still a few things I can't try just yet!

I would like to buy some sauce, but including delivery it is £18. I'm not sure I should be paying £18 for sauce, even though it is a gallon.

What happened to this blog? Did you ever start it?

I had some problems figuring out what blog to get started on and then I started working and had no time for blogging!

I should really get this started soon though. :]

Burning Down 09-03-2013 02:46 PM

Was there a thread for baking somewhere? If there was, I can't find it.

djchameleon 09-03-2013 02:50 PM

It ended up getting merged into this one I think. Just post your baking stuff here

I thought so. Well I got up to some baking again this weekend. The pics are not resizing for whatever reason, they're a little on the large side.

Has anyone ever tried making their own sushi? My dad and I are thinking about giving it a go and I was curious if it's as hard as it sounds.

Cuthbert 09-03-2013 04:47 PM

@Burning Down those pics are 5*

Would eat them all.

I made a rainbow roll using the recipe and instructions from this website: How To Make Sushi | The Easy Way

I seriously recommend that site. There are even little GIF images you can click on that will demonstrate how to roll and do inside out rolls and all that stuff.

I think the key to successful sushi and sashimi is in how well you butcher and fillet the fish. I wasn't very good at it but it turned out surprisingly well. I think it just takes a little practice.

Great site, thanks! I'll let everyone know how it went if I end up giving it a whack.

djchameleon 09-03-2013 05:09 PM

I'd be all over those lemon tarts! Your bf can keep the brownies!

Cuthbert 09-03-2013 05:41 PM

I've never had a flan cake. Looks like a crumpet with syrup on and upside down.

I haven't had a crumpet but I believe that it is softer than a crumpet.

Are crumpets hard?

Arya Stark 09-03-2013 07:19 PM

I've never heard of a flan cake. Lmao. It sounds so silly to me because we just call it flan.

Are they meant to say the same thing? I looked it up and it says Flan everywhere else is much different than it is in Latin American countries.

djchameleon 09-03-2013 07:51 PM

flan cake isn't actually a thing it is just flan.

So yes they are meant to be the same thing.

Yeah please do! I don't have a picture of my rainbow roll but it turned out okay and it was pretty tasty. I followed the instructions really carefully.

Thanks guys! DJ, you're out of luck. My dad was over this morning and he took the rest of the tarts :(

Yeah, sorry. It's just flan. The recipe said Flan Cake for whatever reason. But it was awesome anyways, so delicious.

This is kind of what my flan looked like on the inside:

Goofle 09-04-2013 09:02 AM

Does anybody order from Graze? Not sure if it is available from anywhere other than the UK, but I adore them.

trippy 09-04-2013 11:46 AM

Oh okay! Yeah, I thought it looked was too similar to what I call flan! I think Flan Cake is an actual thing, but more spongey than the custard that Flan is!

Not hard, spongey and bouncey maybe? They are kinda hard and chewy before you toast them but once you've done that and got some butter on them then no.

The flan cake looks about the same consistency and texture as an egg custard.

Burning Down 09-05-2013 12:18 PM

I think this is typically what crumpets look like:

Cuthbert 09-05-2013 12:52 PM

That's the one .

They are nice for breakfast with a cup of tea.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-05-2013 01:17 PM

Today I was playing around with my ice cream maker and I made a Crème Anglaise ice cream with strawberry compote swirls mixed with pieces of shortcake.

I didn't quite get the swirls correct but other than that it came out perfectly & tastes amazing.
And apart from the shortcake I made everything from scratch so I'm feeling rather pleased with myself.

Fried chicken

1. Roll chicken in flour
2. Roll flour chicken in egg
3. Roll flour egg chicken in flour
4. Fry
5. Eat

Spice flour as you please

Cuthbert 09-09-2013 03:38 PM

Pretty much what I do near enough.

Mix my seasoning into the flour, also if you put a little corn starch in the flour it makes the chicken extra crispy.

My seasoning is made up of:

Salt
Ground black pepper
Garlic granules
Onion granules
Oregano

I had fish, chips, mushy peas, battered sausage and a saveloy for tea. Was 5*.

Cuthbert 09-13-2013 05:16 AM

Friday night. Chippy tonight, think I'll have the chicken balti pie w/ chips and a pot of curry sauce & two saveloys.

Oh yes.

Oh yes.

I broil my bacon because I find it's the easiest way to get it super crispy, which is how I like my bacon.

Cuthbert 09-16-2013 12:10 PM

I don't get people who eat unsmoked bacon.

Or people who don't cook it until the fat is crispy and you get those stretchy pieces of gristly fat on it.
