Vacation, any recommendations?

Heya!

Me and the GF are playing with the idea of going on vacation this summer and so we're trying to come up with some options. The most important thing besides a vacation being fun is that it should also be cheap. We're both students. So far, we've thought of the following :

Canal boat trip in England/Wales on the Llangollen canal.

To do this, we would get a boat that can house 6 people, so we'd bring some friends. The cost should be something like a little more than 200 pounds per person and perhaps we could take the plane to and from Liverpool which is not too shabby pricewise, about 60 pounds or so. Just maybe it's possible to do this whole vacation at about 500 pounds which is quite good.

Visit Den Haag in the Netherlands

From the Hague, we could easily go to Rotterdam and Amsterdam for daytrips and see the sights in those places as well. However, living and travel costs are gonna be significantly higher so I'm less positive about this one.

Any comments, warnings or recommendations? Any other good suggestions for vacations? Lay'em on me!

adidasss, thanks for the suggestion .. But I'm not gonna go somewhere just to hang aorund. In other words, why would I want to go to Croatia? Any places to visit or things to do or see that you could recommend?

Jackhammer, a rough plan for when/if I travel to England would of course be to try and meet up with you brits at least for an evening :) Perhaps we could all get hammered, crocked and ****-eyed at a pub somewhere!

I have a british friend who moved here a couple of years ago..

and he said that when he was in continental Europe, Rome/Venice and Madrid were by far his favorite. I don't know how Madrid is now, due to some racial tension and violence, it is not very safe. But five years ago it is definitely like a 24 hour party type of place. I know that most locations in Italy are 'walking towns', so a lot of those museums are cheap/free. He also said that Italy is exactly what it's cracked up to be, so many people ride mopeds and any restaurant you go to will be amazing. Plus it has some of the best museums anywhere. I assume Paris is amazing as well, but he said he didn't like it.

I know a lot of beaches are cheap in Europe, at least compared to America...Greece has a lot of tourist beaches I think.

that's all I got

I've got an Irish friend who travelled round Europe when he got out of school and he said that Switzerland was by far his favourite country. It sounds like an expensive country, but he managed it after only a month or two as a bartender.
