I can't think of any reason good enough to turn to Audioslave.

The point of that video was to highlight a common issue/problem with authors describing black people as different food types. So the equivalent to that is just real life. Pick up any book and behold the same thing happening that doesn't happen when white people are described.

What books though? That all sounded like romance novel trash. Do real books do this?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-11-2016 07:05 PM

i've seen them do it with white people before too. esp. pasty white irish looking characters. i'm all for making fun of these things if a) they're true or b) it's actually funny. this was neither though.

maybe i'm just sensitive about my mozzarella skin though

Granted I don't read as much as I use to, I don't remember any books describing a black man as food. Just like he's black.

Key 12-11-2016 07:06 PM

Deej is just mad because Roxy was the only other person that would react positively to his racial skepticism. News flash, the racism doesn't exist when you want it to.

The Batlord 12-11-2016 07:07 PM

Like I said, that was all trashy romance novel language. If so then using that to talk about literature in general is disingenuous.

Writing with Color

Quote:

One Word: Slavery.

Get this. Cocoa. Coffee. They drove the slave trade. They still drive the slave trade. So comparing your Black character to these foodstuffs? You can see why it’s cause for offense.

It’s especially harmful to compare those of the African Diaspora to chocolate and coffee, but for the reasons above, I think all People of Color deserve more than these comparisons, again and again.

But I call my White characters milky, peachy…

It’s your prerogative to compare your white characters to dairy products and such, but remember: White people are not People of Color.

I have my doubts that White people experience any fetishizing, dehumanizing flashbacks with such comparisons. Still I have heard from those who aren’t so keen on these sorts of comparisons either, so keep that in mind.

Additionally; you sure you like being compared to food like us POC?

But POC call each other…

Folks can’t do what POC do amongst each other, particularly what’s done within their race. I can call myself a delicious brown sugar honeycomb (okay I wouldn’t) and that’s my prerogative as a Black woman.

The whole “he wants that chocolate” line has even been jokingly passed between my Black friends and I as well. But obviously conversational jokes are not the same as a writer describing their character as such. And again, within circles…

Lucem Ferre 12-11-2016 07:10 PM

I always though black people were compared to chocolate.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-11-2016 07:11 PM

I don't see what the big deal is being compared to food. I'm a good Colby cheese myself. Ehh, no need making that joke it probably went over your heads.

The Batlord 12-11-2016 07:27 PM

Is there a white cheese with red hair follicle spots?

Sotry l. Guff.com is specific site.

Lucem Ferre 12-11-2016 11:25 PM

I'm still confused. So you're still writing for that one company, but Guff is going to help you by trying to connect you to audiences?

Key 12-11-2016 11:26 PM

Read my post. Guff.com

Key 12-11-2016 11:27 PM

I said the wrong thing originally

Lucem Ferre 12-11-2016 11:29 PM

Hmm. Things still aren't clear, but I don't think I care enough to really fully understand. I'm hungry.

Key 12-11-2016 11:30 PM

Guff.com. Website to write for. $30/article. 4 articles a week minimum. Easier to understand?

They were making fun of the entire trope but decided to do it by reading romance novel trash. It's more than romance novels that do it.

Yeah, think about it. I'm sure you've read things like that but you just didn't see it as a big deal so it didn't stand out.

That's dumb. You don't know anything about Roxy. Your supposed joke would work better if you said Soulflower. I didn't post that video to get positive reactions from you blokes. I posted it in the spam thread because I thought it was funny.

Yeah it's not a big deal but the fact that it doesn't happen to other races means that it shouldn't really be happening so often with the black people. Get more creative than consistently writing to describe black people as chocolate or caramel coated.

Hispanics and Asians don't really have skin colors conducive to food comparisons for the most part. It's not racism, it's just cliched metaphors.

Frownland 12-12-2016 10:15 AM

He was blacker than a sharpshooter's pupils on acid.

The Batlord 12-12-2016 10:24 AM

The Ace of Spades would have been jealous of this man's skin.

Cuthbert 12-12-2016 10:54 AM

Does lobster count as a food? I've heard people referred to as lobsters lots of times. Usually fat Daves in summertime with their shirts off outside the boozers.

Pig skinned as well, heard that before.
