Well, we aren't going to agree.
To me, the storyline(s) have always
been incredible and the otherworldly
picture that's painted is so creatively
encompassing in its scope that you
have this fine line that needs to be
tread in order for the story to not be
so completely overwhelming in film.

WWWP 09-09-2020 06:18 PM

It's a great story what are you talking about? @OH
I'm currently reading it.

I hope theaters are open by the time this comes out.
Never seen the Lynch film, not super interested tbh. I'm a big fan of the Jodorowsky/Moebius ghost version though.

I will watch Timothee Chalamet in anything tbh but casting him as Paul gave me butterflies

Horrible Harry Potter/LOTR fantasy with corny ass symbolism that has aged incredibly poorly pretending to be science fiction and on top of that is insufferably boring af.

The Batlord 09-09-2020 06:41 PM

You'll get no truck from me hating on Harry Potter, LOTR, and fantasy even if I'm not over the moon about Dune. Bitchass mother****er.

Frownland 09-09-2020 06:42 PM

I had no idea that it was like Harry Potter, that makes me more interested in it than what I know about it so far.

The Dune series itself is honestly pretty damn good, but for various reasons it is hard to get the "feel" of it down visually. Alejandro Jodorowsky might have been able to pull it off, but alas...

The Batlord 09-09-2020 07:11 PM

I tried reading the second book but it at least started out way more boring than the first so I dropped it. You're saying I should give it another shot?

Don’t. Imagine OH creating his current fantasy version
(Over tHe top) and that’s what you’ll pretty much get.
The Jodorowsky version could’ve been incredible.

I think you should. The first three books are pretty solid actually. Their fingerprints are all over Star Wars, comics and a lot of the pulp sci-fi that emerged in the mid 70's through the 80's. Things get really whacky once they jump forward around 3500 years in God Emperor Of Dune (Book 4) though.

rostasi 09-09-2020 07:32 PM

I often read about people who think that the fourth book was the very best.
For me, it was just a leap forward in the story - and a good one at that.
The first six - really, that’s about all you really need.
Herbert died soon after that, but I was able to talk with him for quite a while a
few months before and got his signature (which is a kind of unusual thing for me to ask for).

Hell yeah. It’s not like you’re going to die not having read thousands of better books. Keep on with the series you already know blows the ding dong.

The Batlord 09-09-2020 07:49 PM

I'm a genre nerd who loves sci fi and fantasy and Dune is a heavy hitter so why not give it another shot while I'm busy never reading Anna Karenina.

rostasi 09-09-2020 07:55 PM

@OH
Yeah, because we all know how people live
one-dimensionally and things like this never happen
(“God Emperor...”):

Spoiler for contains spoilers:

Anteater 09-09-2020 08:15 PM

Book 4 is my favorite too. Would make a great movie all on its own, but it would be very hard to do it justice.

The Batlord 09-09-2020 08:30 PM

Speaking of hard opinions on sci-fi/fantasy we should all do a book club reading the Sword of Truth series. That would be this site's crowning achievement.

That might be fun. Roger Zelazny's series The Chronicles Of Amber has some meat too.

I mean does that have all the stuff that would set this forum off like Sword of Truth would? I mean if this site had a larger user base with more variety of opinions like a mid-size 00's forum a Sword of Truth book club could splinter the site.

rostasi 09-09-2020 09:04 PM

Sword of Truth forums

Imagine getting to look through one of those books (idk what it's called, the entirety of the movie but in comic strip form?)

OccultHawk 09-10-2020 03:28 AM

I slept on it. Dune is still for losers.

I've never heard of Dune and I'm no judge here because I mostly don't care about science fiction but ****ting on Anna Karenina is unacceptable

grindy 09-10-2020 04:15 AM

I've also never read it and I'm Russian.

Which is even more unacceptable, I had quite a breakdown over that when I read it

Someone wrote Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, maybe Anna Karenina and Space Battles will be next. Who knows

The Batlord 09-10-2020 04:08 PM

I think I still own Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
