Totally a Boston thing. They are even advertised in stores that way.

Never. I might say "denim" jacket, but I always call them "jeans," unless I call them by their brand name like Wranglers or Levi's.

Does anyone call it the Packie store?

Most people called it the "package store" when I was growing up. Sometimes "the packie". Never "the packie store".

The overlap with the British slur never occurred to me until now.

Let's make a Rule 34 thread... You pick one thing that Rule 34 may not have covered and everyone else looks for it. Make sure to post videos as proof.

Surely jeans just come up to your waist, while dungarees have a bib and shoulder straps; two different ítems of clothing. Just because they' re both usually denim isn't much reason for mixing up the terms. What's going on in Boston??

You don't call those overalls? Anyway, "dungarees" is kind of an old school word. People from Boston who are in their forties or younger don't use it.
