Fake IDs
The worst thing about a 21 year old drinking law is that venues and booze go together. I'm 18 can't go see bands I like. Balls. Has anyone bought a fake ID off le intrawebs? Anyone got scammed? This is serious business.

I never had a fake ID as legal age is 18 here, 19 for alcohol, but you can go clubbing and attend shows when you're 18. I know people who've had fakes, but have gotten rid of them of course since they turned 18. What I don't like is all the 14-year-olds taking up space in the clubs. Plus they look like ridiculous little kids next to the adults.

Sneak in. Or get buddy-buddy with the bouncer. :)

When you go to a concert or whatever, make sure you're wearing a hat, maybe sunglasses, or basically anything that would make it hard to point out any obvious differences between you and the photo. Most of the time the bouncers are just checking age because there's so many people to go through, and that's really all they're responsible for. I can tell you something... My previous driver's license photo had been taken in 99, but then re-issued in 06' with the same photo... and I recently got a new one a couple weeks ago. The difference in those photos is vast, as I look nothing like I did in 99. Point is, I'd been carded I don't know how many times and I never once got any suspicious looks due to the photo looking so different from my actual self. I come naturally to the conclusion that they rarely compare the photo. As long as the ID card or driver's license is legit, they won't have an instant suspicion that would get them focused on anything beyond finding out your birthdate. |
The thing is I have to travel to shows, usually 30 plus miles. It really sucks to have to go home empty handed. It's happened to me a few times Blonde Redhead sold out, I tried to sneak into Local 506 before I turned 18 turns out the band I was buddy with had gotten in trouble for doing that, and one time another venue got shut down by the fire marshals. The few times I have sneaked in I've gotten death stares and I was sure I was going to get kicked out.
edit: Thanks freebase. I can't think of anyone but I'll keep that in mind. Me and my mom are like twins (yes I'm a girl that would be really weird otherwise) but there's that whole thing she's 21 years older than me. I look older than I am. When I was 16 someone at a space asked if I was in gradschool but I don't think I could do 40. |

Yea, so it might be a little harder for you to do, considering the fact that you won't be sporting a beard, hat and sunglasses looking like you're about to rob a bank. If you ever come across someone who'd make it worth it, you may as well give it a go. You could try it out at several clubs and see if it works. |

I know how it feels - I was always one of the older kids in my grade but I was still 4 days too young to see Opeth at an R18 gig. :(
All I can say is be careful. My mate use to craft fake IDs and none of our friends ever got caught with them over the years but as soon as his sister used one for the first time, she got busted. |
God bless Britain and our drinking age.
21 is just WTFingfuck. Why the fuck do you need to be so old to drink? I started drinking 8/9 cans at weekends when I was 13, never did me any harm. |
I was always curious as to why the US is so ****ing anal about the drinking age. 21????? That's messed up. Most people are in college at 18 and finish when they're 21 or 22.

It really makes no sense. And I really don't blame these venues for being 21+. They're trying to keep a float and the best way to do that is sell beer & liquor and the best way to do that and stay out of trouble is not to let kiddies in. Which in the big scheme of things doesn't work because instead of going to show why not just go some party and get fucked up.

I didn't know that.

By that I meant they'll let you enlist in the army.

I didn't know about the rental car thing is what I meant.
|
Yeah due to insurance reasons (I guess) you can't rent a car unless you are really really really really really really special. It's usually around 25 but can be lower. Of course I'm speaking of my city, and I'm also just repeating things my parents have told me so I could be way off.

it goes on to say there may be upper age limits at some locations, ha |

I used to work for an organisation that put on gigs for all ages at various venues across the city. The problem is that venues want to be able to serve all patrons drinks to make their money. A lot of bands weren't interested in playing all ages gigs either. It really sucked. Anyway, I'd be a bit weary about fake IDs. In the past it was pretty easy to get by with them but these days at many venues they actually scan the card and keep it on record and all this other crazy stuff. Plus fake IDs are more prevalent than in the past so bouncers are getting better at picking the fakes. |
