I don't even acknowledge the existence of stylistic sects any more. I don't know if it's the product of growing up or just ceasing to give a fuck, but I really think that all the so called Hipsters, Emos, Goths, etc. are really just the same fucking thing looking a little different from each other and listening to music that sounds different, and hating everyone who doesn't belong in their sheep pin.

When I was a teen, I did the same crap--albeit for different styles/music culture identification--so I can relate and I don't really blame people for it.... But from my perspective, these stylistically-minded people who listen to only what their style permits and their friends accept... they look and are acting fucking retarded.

I wish I had the brain I have, back when I was doing that stupid shit. I probably would have learned a lot more about music and culture than I did up until this point.

Now days, I hear about "Hipsters" and all these other trends, and I just see a bunch of people who are temporarily populating a passing phenomenon and nothing more. I couldn't give a fuck less. I don't hang out with them. They have no impact on my opinions or anything else involved in my life that I have actual control over.

Popular/influential style may as well be located in another fucking dimension for all I care.

I think I stopped caring about stylistic sects when I realised they were based on the more general concept that people constantly strive towards an ideal of themselves in life (basically a projection of who/what they could potentially be). And since teenagers are quite impressionable, cliquey and relatively free from commitments, their ideals tend to take on more aesthetic values influenced by other people. Stylistic sects are the teenage form of ideals.

I've come to think that the extent to which a person strives towards these ideals is more telling about the person than the ideals themselves; i.e. superficially, a bling adorned rap fanatic turning into a leather and spikes metalhead is a drastic change/evolution. However, underneath, the zebra stripes probably are still the same - different ideals, same attitude/commitment towards the ideals. Ask most people what they think of their past selves and there's a good chance they'll be critical with a response like "I was an idiot back then"... and quite often the reason is that their ideals have changed drastically since then. Less often, the reason is that they realise they've been pigeonholing themselves by even attaching themselves so diligently to these ideals in the first place.

Sorry if I'm babbling... I've been awake for far too long

The thing is, I'm a teen but I've understood that people (including my friends) will grow out of this subculture/stylistic sects. I've got friends who try to be 'emo', and 'hipster', but I never try to conform and so have to keep my mouth shut. I often find myself excluded because I refuse to do what they do. Extremely irritating but what can we do, human beings naturally conform, even conforming to non-conform. If that makes sense. :|

There's a couple of hipsters in my school and people absolutely revere them because they're into 'cool' music and are in a cool 'rock band' and actually write their own music (which sounds like some crap Arctic Monkeys/Kooks ripoff). So ****ing annoying, like they go out of their way to try and be like a hipster, wearing those stupid nerd glasses and skinny little jeans.

Did you just compare one of my favourite bands with The Kooks?

I'm offended, The Arctic Monkeys are brilliant. The Kooks are annoying cunts.

I'm not a big fan of Arctic Monkeys (some songs I like though, I liked Potion Approaching), effing hate The Kooks. But what I meant was that the resident 'rock band' of my school plays music that rips off both those bands, with a very horrible end product, very bland, cliche and predictable.

Sorry if i offended you

I never really fit into any group. They all kind of bothered me. It was like they weren't really them anymore they were just doing whatever they could to fit in their niche. Sad cases

Yeah I know what you mean.

Arctic Monkeys/The Strokes/Libertines/The Cribs/The Kooks, that type of sound. Just typical Indie (except for the Arctic Monkeys because they're great.)

Too many of them about, so fucking boring it's beyond belief.
