If you call b.s. on it happening here, that's fine- I guess I really don't know what's going to happen. I'm merely pointing out that every site goes through this or something like it. I guess some strong ones come out. How do they do it? Solid leadership- lot's of quality moderators- and keeping fresh, new ideas rolling. Maintaining the core members. And keeping an eye on trolling of new members, which usually makes them leave failing to replenish the pool. Alright well I'm done, because I'm just as sick of writing this post as you all are reading it at this point... |

What I'd like to know about these forums you frequented is what the site did to push itself to a new level of discussion. Music, like sports, never seems to end. The idea that they couldn't keep talking about sports concerns me. So was it guys showing up wanting to talk about the 62 world series or were they popping in to tell you how nasty the Yankees were? |
Not since I got here.

I kind of feel bad for appearing to be the one who started this thread. To be honest, I was posting in a welcome back thread and I was just pissed off because no one responded to my Railcars thread  But I am actively trying to make more meaningful posts; the problem is indeed not just new users but anyone who comes into a discussion like this band vs. that band and just lists one, absolutely no explanation of why. I'll admit I'm probably guilty of a lot of these things, and you guys might be talking about me for some of this stuff (though I hope not!) I try to make meaningful posts with actual substance though, and I plan to start writing reviews again, which I did for a while but got to busy to do. The problem is I disappear sometimes, because I don't really seem to connect with people on forums all that well. Oh well, I'm here for a bit anyway.

I'm just pissed nobody shares my taste. I rarely can find a thread to post in, but whatever.

Anyways, I'm gonna try and involve myself more in the music discussions. I don't believe in the musicbanter doomsday scenario. I too have been around on the internet for quite a while (since the mid 90s) and I've been a part of a fair share of communities. Contrary to the doomsday scenario people are posting about here, not all of them die. Those who have a good turnover of users meaning new users come and old users go keep going strong even after years. I think musicbanter does have a high turnover and I think it will do just fine, but as other's have pointed out, I think moderation is important. I've seen communities die basically because there was no rules and everyone except the trolls got fed up. I actually think that scenario is a higher risk here than the place drying up because a lack of new blood. We got a lot of good members in 2008 and 2009, I'm sure we will in 2010 as well. We just gotta make sure musicbanter is the kind of community that attracts good members. |
I avoid the music sections like the plague now, music discussion gets so tideous and way too passionate.
I get worked up over video games enough as it is. |
