A month now without television

After knocking over my LCD last month I have now went four weeks without a tv whilst waiting on an insurance claim. At the beginning I was lost without it but apart from watching football I have come to the realise it is not a hardship, but a positive situation.I am Reading more rediscovering albums and keeping fitter.

Sansa Stark 04-02-2010 03:34 PM

TV sucks, I voluntarily stopped watching it a few years back. I've seen a little bit of things, but like five minutes at a time.. ****ing boring.. I'd rather read my books

Akira 04-02-2010 03:35 PM

Agreed, TV is rubbish. However, anyone who does like it has no need for one in this day and age.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-02-2010 03:43 PM

I disagree, I much prefer TV dramas to movies.

I really like a good TV drama but it seems these days they are all below par. Even the 'big' shows have far too many flaws and annoyances.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-02-2010 03:49 PM

It's still there you just have to know where to find it.

Channel 4's recent adaptation of David Peace's Red Riding books was fantastic and just as good as anything that channel put out in it's heyday.

I don't really watch an awful lot of televison but I don't miss stuff like that.

Janszoon 04-02-2010 03:52 PM

Coincidentally I recently lost all my books. This has caused me to focus more attention on watching TV and playing video games.

Arya Stark 04-02-2010 04:20 PM

^ Video games are fine, in my opinion.
I don't like watching TV, it makes me feel like a vegetable.
I like to be doing something, which is why i guess I enjoy going on the computer over watching television.

Bulldog 04-02-2010 04:33 PM

I don't think I've watched TV for anything other than football-related reasons for almost two years now. I haven't missed it.

Akira 04-02-2010 04:36 PM

None of my TVs can receive a signal, so anything TV related I want to watch I do so online.

TheCunningStunt 04-02-2010 04:40 PM

Only thing I use my tele for is films and occasionally xbox

duga 04-02-2010 04:50 PM

I'm a sucker for sci fi. My list of favorite shows would make me seem like I belong at a convention waiting for George Takei to shake my hand so I don't have to wash it ever again.

NumberNineDream 04-02-2010 05:12 PM

Well I like to have a TV wherever I am. It's more of a multi-tasking thing:
-TV in the background
-Surfing the net on my laptop
-Reading a book
-Muting the TV to listen to music (but I still need to have something else to watch other than my laptop, so TV's still on).

Plus, I only could do my homework with the TV on... the silence (or a black turned off screen) bores me. I need to have something moving in front of me.

That was just another overly-dry attempt at humor on my part. I didn't really lose my books. :p:

I like them too, but man do I feel like I'm wasting time when I play them.

jackhammer 04-02-2010 06:29 PM

I don't watch a huge amount of T.V but I would suffer if I couldn't see at least one movie a week. Although recently I have been completely ennamoured with Bettany Hughes who is an Historian who specialises in ancient history and has looks to match. Beauty + brains= absolute win. She has a series of programmes on More4 at the moment regarding ancient History and I think I have died and gone to heaven when I watch! Urban will like I think!
Bettany Hughes - official website - historian, author, broadcaster

The programmes:
The Ancient World with Bettany Hughes - Channel 4

No it's just crap and full of High concept themes that don't add up to scrutiny.

I feel the same way. After I beat a game I think
"Were those 10 hours really worth it?"

But hey, make life entertaining.

salty_rock 04-03-2010 11:31 AM

wow, a month without tv? i dunno if i could do it man.

Laurent Quinn Proper 04-03-2010 06:06 PM

I only watch Tru TV, the National Geographic channel, the new National Geographic Wild channel, History and History International channel... and sports. I guess I watch a lot of TV. :tramp:

Freebase Dali 04-04-2010 12:15 AM

Yea I don't even have cable any more. Too expensive, and not necessary. I just watch stuff online when I want to. For free. Even watched the Superbowl live online. It's just to the point now that there's no need to pay for cable because of online availability. I find great documentaries online, any TV series you can think of all uploaded on air date, any live sports game, any movie... all free.
So cable?
Pshh... if I didn't have DVD's I still liked, I'd sell my flat-screen.

Internet is so much more expensive than cable here. Its like 85 for the internet and only like an extra 15 for standard cable. So it really wouldn't save much to only drop cable.

Damn... you talking cable internet or DSL or satellite?
I'm about to get up on this cable internet instead of this slow DSL crap and I'm not going to be busting more than 50 a month. Still getting quotes, but where I'm moving, we have a fiber internet provider so I'm looking into working through them so I might get good speeds for cheaper than what I'm looking at...

I'm the same way. It's more of a routine sort of thing for me though. When I'm all alone in the kitchen I like having the tv on in the other room to make it seem like I'm not alone, plus it's good background noise.. Unless it's those cheesey commercials that are played 100x too many -

"What was the URL I was supposed to look at? Finallyfast. HEY, my computer is fast - FINALLY~!" ...I'm not impressed that I know all the lines for that commercial. And I kinda really hope someone else knows what commercial I'm talking about lol

I had Cox Cable at home... I downloaded albums at 1 mb/s sometimes. I didn't think it was bad.

As for t.v., I went through boot camp and now am at a place with no t.v. except in one of the lounges. I'll watch a good basketball game, maybe a bit of Sportscenter, but to be honest I love music. I would much rather spend a half hour or hour of time listening to an album than watching something on t.v. I play video games a bit, but not too fond of those these days either. I get bored quickly.

Could you shoot me a PM with links to the places where you watch sports and movies? I could never find movies online! :(

I do too.
The time FLIES by, and you wonder where it went.
...Eventually realizing that you've wasted it on a video game.
It does always feel good to finally complete a game, though.

CanwllCorfe 04-05-2010 05:56 PM

I don't think all T.V. is bad because there's so many things that I don't see how you couldn't find anything of interest. Of late I've been watching American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, and the always great Antiques Roadshow.

I don't play video games.. but I DO enjoy puzzles and things like that. (Cryptograms, sudoku, logic problems, etc.)

FETCHER. 04-05-2010 06:03 PM

i have a tv in my room which i havent plugged in from i moved into the room, i dont miss it. but i loveeee watching dvds. id watch them all day everyday if i could.

Zer0 04-08-2010 04:24 PM

I barely ever watch tv nowdays. Seriously, apart from the odd film there's absolutely nothing good to watch. Turn on Sky Digital and you're greated with hundreds of channels of completely useless ****e.

And of course the webbernetz rules :)

Mojo 04-10-2010 12:38 AM

I watch most of my TV online, download it or buy the DVD's. So really I'd say 90% of the time, if my TV is switched on it's because I have a DVD on or my PS3 streaming from my hard drive.

I watch alot of TV but generally in those formats. Very rarely will I put the TV on and flick through channels. If it wasnt for sport, I might even say that I wouldn't have a use for one.

noise 04-10-2010 05:33 AM

i don't don't even own a television. it's been years since i actually watched one.

but i do watch television shows and movies, usually every evening. wife and i are stay-at-home kind of people. plus, with my blazing fast internet, i can download 1080p bluray rips in about 30 mins, so i've got several drives full of films/shows in HD.

crash_override 04-11-2010 11:46 AM

I'm already into too many ongoing TV series', I'm already caught up in the madness man. I'm already part of the system man, a product of the media. I'm in too deep.

There's no way I can stop now, I need cable more than anything in the world.
