Last.fm Retires it's On-Demand Streaming

Last.fm – the Blog · Yes, it does!

This will severely hurt revenue possibilities for musicians on the site. It's also an annoyance because I've directed countless people to my last.fm page and told them to stream the albums there. I've used the On Demand feature countless times and it was an excellent, high quality alternative to Youtube for looking up songs quickly.

Facebook does the same thing all the time: "fix" things that aren't broken. And no matter how much any one complains about it, they're too arrogant to fix it and will stick to their guns unless they start losing money. And with something like this, I doubt it will drive masses of people away... it was just a really good feature that shouldn't have been removed.

It may have something to do with the fact such things are a legal nightmare and hugely expensive were the musicians to be reimbursed.

I can't see how this would be legally troubling. From my understanding, you could only upload music if you owned the rights to it. So you'd be a label or an artist uploading music anyway.

And if it was so expensive, why not just stop sharing revenue? It would still suck but it'd remain a very powerful tool of promotion.

I just think it's stupid to abandon something that really made them blow up in the last few years. They show up near the top for nearly every musician's google results, with a promise of "free listening"... well that's BS now because to actually listen to them you'd have to turn on the radio and hope they come on.

I had never seen this before. It sounds like it would have been useful

Leave it to me to enjoy a feature only once it's about to be removed

i don't think i used this. i only really use last.fm for the scrobbling/charts and looking up artist information/related artists etc. i used to use the radio and **** when i first started using last.fm but i don't think canadians even can now. whatever.

That's just sad man, I'm sick of popular websites randomly changing things.

I never used that, I had no idea it existed.
That being said, having a subscriber account isn't even that great, except for the fact I can see who visits my page. Although unlimited radio is pretty neat

>Last.fm wants money
>Last.fm has shown it will do what it wants/needs to get money

There's your motivation. I never really used it but 'twas useful and it's a shame it's gone.

Yeah, pretty much this.
