Meditation

Anybody here meditate? I decided to start a class which started this morning. What do you think of it and is it beneficial?

Just judging from today I feel like I will really like this. It was calming and relaxing and seems like it could provide some inner peace.

I don't think I could sit still long enough for it to count. My ass would go numb and I'd get bored.

I don't know how to meditate, but I love the droning effect... monks use this chant during meditation.

I don't even think about it in terms of time. The way I go about it is to count to 10 in my head - a new number every time I breathe in or out - and just keep repeating that process 'til I feel like stopping. It's definitely a great way to relax and just calm everything down, but it only ever works for me if I can do it someplace quiet. Seeing as I live next to a main road not to mention practically next door to a pub, so it's the time I can dedicate to it's much more scarce as of this last few years. It's a shame, because it's a kinda cool thing to do.

I've been meditating daily for about 3 weeks now and It's been very helpful.

I started out a little overzealous with two 30 min. sessions a day and later found that this was causing me to 'clear' more toxic energy than I was able to deal with at the time. I've since dialed it down to one 15 minute session in the morning and sometimes an additional brief stint in the evening. That seems to be working pretty well.

I agree with Savannah. If you're new to it, start out slow and try to have minimal expectations of what should be happening, or whether or not you are doing it right. Aside from maintaining a gentle focus on your breath, mantra, or whatever your focal point may be, just 'show up' and allow the process to unfold in its own way.

I'd like to more often, it would connect me with the earth more. It's easy to become disengaged with what is going on around you.

I find a decent ambient album, ten minutes and a comfy sofa does the job.

If you want to be relaxed then I think it's relatively easy to attain even if it is for a very short time.

I have been trying the last few days with not much progress. I end up falling asleep or my mind actually just goes 2x as crazy. And suggestions?

I practice meditation every day. It's very calming when life puts the pedal to the metal. I've been doing it so long it just comes naturally, I used to have a more 'schedule' type routine, but these days it just happens. I've even had a few crazy experiences while meditating.

I find it easy since I'm a calm person, if I want to, I can just sit here for an hour, and the rest of the day will seem a lot more relaxed.

Any tips?

It was honestly really hard for me to get into it. When I was first trying, I would get real restless and impatient, like I was expecting something to happen. I wouldn't be able to give any good tips, if at all. The best thing I could say is to just let yourself go, and empty your mind, even if that's cliche. It's like trying to fall asleep, best not to fight any feelings.

I know emptying your mind can be difficult sometimes, but it's rewarding. Like when you hear something, but are not quite sure what it is, and you focus a second to hear it again, and you're brain is completely silent in that instance.

Getting completely relaxed is usually the hardest part. It helps to be in a good position so that you don't have to force anything to stay in place. Search your body for anything that feels tense, and consciously relax it. Try to stack your vertebrae so that they hold the weight of your head, neck, and torso without effort (stole that from the internet). Only focus on your breathing. Breathe in slowly and deep. After focusing on breathing for a bit, you can cast that away, essentially focusing on nothing, thus silencing your mind. Once your mind is empty, and it feels like you're completely relaxed, it should be easy. Getting to that state is hardest part.

I tried it for a bit but didn't get anything out of it. I thought it was pretty boring. Once in a while I'd get a slight buzz sort of like that you would get from a cig, but I think that was just an oxygen high from all the deep breathing.

Astronomer 08-13-2013 01:28 AM

I've tried it many times, but most of the time I can't really "reach" any of these amazing, meditative levels of 'nirvana' that people who meditate claim of, I usually just feel really relaxed. I usually can't get my brain to switch off, I think too much :(

Meditation very good practice. No one can get Concentration at one day or at one instance. So practice daily increasing the time interval.Very good results will be there.

For those who can't clear their minds - don't worry about it, very few people can actually clear their mind of all thoughts, but providing you can discipline yourself to merely watch your thoughts (the key word there is watch, don't grab on to any of them, don't explore them, don't try to influence them in any way, just watch them as they pop into and out of, or flow, through your head, and remain detached) then you will benefit.

I've been meditating since I was 7 years old. I was diagnosed with ADHD and instead of obeying the doc's orders and putting me on the **** medication, my parents sent me to a local place specialising in yoga and meditation. I practice both every day and they are part of my life. As an aside, I think it helped with the ADHD.

Dulce 10-29-2013 10:09 PM

Like yoga? Just kidding!

Yes, I do.
